Hi,
I have since a few weeks had problems with my laptop (Acer Aspire 5620) at startup. WindowsXP runs a file system inconsistency check without finding any errors. I have spent a lot of time to track this down and while doing that I found some intications that this might be caused by Norton Antivirus/Internet Security.
With this information i disabled Norton Antivirus (disabled service "Norton Antivirus") and found that the problem was gone. As disabling my antivirus software is not the desired solution I need advice how to proceed.
Is there anyone else that had had this or similar problem?
My LiveUpdate subscription is about to expire and I have to consider to switch to anoter antivirus software if this problem can't be fixed within the next weeks.
SW version 16.0.5.134

Hi e.78,
Do you have any other security programs like ZoneAlarm or Spysweeper?
The latest version of Norton AntiVirus is 16.5, so you can try to get this latest version and check this problem.

Hi,
Sorry, got the digits in wrong order. My version is SW version 16.5.0.134, the latest I get from LiveUpdate.
No, I have no other security programs installed and I have not recently made any changes to myinstallation.
And as before, if I diable Norton AV the problem is gone...
Anyone out there with similar problems?

mij,
In the first post, the version was mentioned as 16.0.5.134 and that's why I asked to get the lastest version.
e.78,
Are you using FAT32 or NTFS File system?
Did you try to run a Full System Scan after this?
If not, run a Full System Scan and let us know if it detects any threats. You can also try to exclude a drive from the default boot-time check which will disable the inconsistency check on Startup.
1. Click Start > Run.
2. Type command and click OK.
3. In the command prompt, type the following and press Enter:
chkntfs /x c:
Where c: is your drive letter. If you have two drives- C and D, you have ti type it as the following and then press Enter:
chkntfs /x c: d:
4. Exit command prompt and restart the computer.
Since the file check is not finding any errors in your Windows, I think you can follow this without any problem.

I understand. However, the only builds in which either a 5 or a 134 occur is the latest build. He merely got the order reversed. He had to have been saying 16.5.0.134, which is the latest build.

maxong68 -
Couple of questions please-
Did you install NIS2009 over NIS2008 (no uninstall or Norton Removal Tool used before the install of NIS2009)?
When was the last time your hard drive was defragmented?
Have you emptied your Temp folders recently?
Thank you.

Hi again,
I now have found sort of a solution to my problem. That was to uninstall NAV in favor for a security suite from another vendor.
I have been using NAV for many years. It was recently upgraded (automatically) to 2009, and this is when the problems started. As mentioned before I got HD inconsistency check run at system startup. NO- there is no probem with my HD and NO the solution is not to swicth HD ckeching off. In my opinion the problem lies within the NAV software.
So, I contacted support (support in Sweden is contracted to another company, not Norton/Symantec). I did not get any feedback whenever this was a known problem or not. I was asked to completely remove the NAV and then reinstall. I did this, it seemed to work better until I got latest updated trough live update - I run into the same problems with HD inconsistecy checks.
At this point i decided to try another antivirus software as my subscription was abut to expre anyway. With norton gone so was my problems with HD inconsistency checks.
