My hard disc has crashed and been reformatted with a re-installation of Windows 7. I was running Norton Internet Security on that and 2 other machines (used all my 3 licenses).
Can I still dowlonad a copy for my crashed machine (new hardware disc), even though I have acticated it on 3 machines. Can the online activation deteact the MAC address or serial number of my machine to confirm it was origionaly installed on it?
Any help would be appreciated.

Dave,
Reinstalling should not cause any problems. If you do have one then either use Norton Management to resolve it yourself or contact customer support here;
and they will get it fixed in short order.

Dave,
Just one thing to check -- if you did a Restore to Factory condition to get back in action on the new hard drive this will have reinstalled everything that originally came preinstalled with the PC including a trial security application that they often include.
If so you need to remove by uninstalling in the usual way and then clean up with a special tool. So please tell us if this is so and what the security application was. Then we can point you to the tool to get whether Norton or some other brand ......
This is important or the installation of your Norton may be corrupted ....

Ok, so I had to take my Dell back to factory settings and it was one of the 3 licenses I had for Norton. I need to re-install Norton as well, but noticed that Hugh mentioned a "clean-up tool"? The computer had MacAfee installed originally and I have removed the 3 programs using the Add/Remove software program. What else do I need to do before installing Norton?
I do still have one license left, however, our computer is almost 10 years old, so if the hard drive reformating doesn't work we will be getting another computer. I want to have a license left to install on a new computer, if needed. I should also mention we won't need to renew until June 2013...
Thanks for your help!

Here's a link to the McAfee source for the tool:
http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SO
That's a full list of tools for many makes of security applications so scan down to the McAfee since the links I have are for an exe file and we are discouraged from posting those because they could be malware.
The easiest way to reinstall your Norton after removing everything else is to run the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool as below since it will clean up and then download and install a preactivated copy of your product. So that should not run up another activation from your total.
If it does then contact Support via the CHAT route and tell them what has been going on, where you started from and they will sort it out since that have the tools and access to the databases.
Here is a link to the new Norton Remove & Reinstall tool that, like the older Norton Removal Tool removes most Norton Products from your system, but the newer tool uninstalls the Norton products from your computer and reinstalls the latest version of your Norton security product. already preactivated.
To contact customer support Click on this link https://www.norton.com/chat and work on from there.
Please let us know how you get on or if you have any queries ....

Ok, so the MacAfee removal tool worked well, thanks.
The Norton reinstall isn't going so well. I downloaded the removal tool and it failed to detect a valid Norton product. I purchased Norton years ago when the computer was new and installed using the CDs (which I no longer have). I have since renewed and updated my subscription online. So, I don't have anything for the Norton removal tool to remove...so I'm stuck. It won't prompt for a reinstallation. Should I just use my last license and then contact Customer Service via chat?
Thanks!

Sorry about the Reinstall -- that's a feature I hadn't taken into account ....
You could do two things:
Go to your MyNortonAccount where you registered the activations and use the Download button to get it downloaded and installed and there's a fair chance it will recognize the hardware or a token left behind and not rack up another installation
If it does rack up another activation then yes go to Computer Support via the CHAT route and they will add the activation back in for future use.
I think the installations listed in MyNortonAccount should have a dustbin icon against each and if you can pick the one that crashed you can click that dustbin and it will deactivate the installation and liberate the activation for future use.
And if you want to you can download a single installation file for NIS 2012 by using this link:
http://www.symantec.com/redirects/norton/norton_co
This will give you NIS-ESD-19-5-1-2-EN which is not the very latest but it will take only a few LiveUpdates with restarts to bring fully uptodate.
BTW If you want to delay upgrading to 2013, which is usually a good idea early on in the life history of a new version, I'd suggest goint into Settings / Upgrades and turning off the Automatic Download of New Version. With this on it will at some point download the upgrade files during idle time and ask if you want to install and I prefer to decide when even for downloading the files.

Thanks Hugh!
I downloaded Norton and it appears (as of this moment) that I still have a license left to use. It must have recognized it on it's own because I didn't select anything. I appreciate all your support!
