Help! Computer running very slow & affecting internet speeds

Hi,

I just got Norton Internet Security & Utilities 2012.  Followed all instructions & removed old internet security (Titanium).  I have Dell dimension 4500S and 2 laptops that run  occasionally on 6MB DSL.  Ever since I put Norton on my computer, it is SO SLOW! I can't hardly do anything!  I did not have this trouble with the previous software. Also, when my son uses his laptop (and he does NOT have Norton), he cannot download anything w/ease.  It totally ties up the bandwidth.  When I shut down my computer, which is attached to the jack, router & wi-fi router, then he is able to get speed back up to normal.  So it is most definately to do with Norton.  I cannot function this way.  What can I do to fix it?

Hi lowries4:

Welcome to the Norton community.

Are you referring to Trend Micro's Titanium security software?  If so, it's possible that you may have some residual files or registry entires that are causing a problem with NIS 2012.  See if you can download and run the Titanium removal tool here and see if this helps.

If that doesn't help, please check to see if your Dell Dimension 4500S came with it's own factory-installed secuirty software.  Dell computers sometimes have built-in security programs that also interfere with the firewall or real-time anti-virus protection in NIS.

Please post back and let us know your Windows OS and if you have the latest NIS 2012 v. 19.2.0.10 (Support | About).  You should also ensure you've re-booted your PC and run manual LiveUpdates until LiveUpdate reports that nothing except pulse updates are available for download - this may require more than one re-boot .

It's possible  that you may have to perform a clean re-install of NIS 2012 using the Norton Removal Tool (see instructions here) once you get the Titanium files off your computer, but let us know first if any of the suggestions above were helpful and we'll come up with a customized plan for you.

Re: Help! Computer running very slow & affecting internet speeds

I did what you said and it seems to be much better now, at least on my compter.  Not freezing like before.  My son is still complaining about his download speed though.

THanks!
