High CPU Usage by NIS 2012 19.7.1.5

I have windows xp sp 2 and my ram is 2 gb and harddisk is 320 Gb.Yesterday my Nis was using about 85%-93% of one cpu.

Why this was happening?

How long was this high cpu usage? Were you using the computer at the time?
If it was a relatively short time, it could be a background scan or LiveUpdate.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Identity Safe data.

Hi Saurav,

peterweb addressed the cpu issue you are having. What I was wondering is your listing of your service pack for windows xp. You said you're using sp2. I'm wondering if that's a typo and you're actually using sp3. If so, ok. If you're not sure, go into Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs. Your current service pack will be listed there.

Or go to the Start Menu.

Click Start>Run>type "winver" into the space provided without the quotation marks, then click OK. The small window that opens, 'About Windows' will also say what version your service pack is. You should be running SP3 for the time we have remaining. Support for Windows XP SP3 ends in April 2014.

i"m sure that I'm using xp 32 bit sp 2

NIS was using high cpu for about 30-40 mins

Before that I scanned my usb and NIs had detected 8 threats in it and quarantined all of them.

Hi Saurav,

Did you check to see which service pack you're using? If you're running windows xp, it's urgent that you also have Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed. SP2 is old and outdated and frankly you wouldn't be able to do anything with your system. Your machine would have been taken down by every windows vulnerability regardless of your security software.

We just had a major update at windows update Tuesday.

That may have had everything to do with the CPU usage. What were the threats?

Just to add a bit more to this thread if Saurav were to re-visit this post. After doing some checking around on the XP service pack dates, I found support for windows XP sp2 ended in July 2010. That's a full two years ago. Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP was released in April 2008. That's what I've been running with my XP since it was released. I can't imagine going two years without any windows updates.

I urge Saurav to visit Windows Update to install SP3 from there. If it is in 'Hidden Updates', restore it back to High Priority and install it. Or follow Krusty13's link to Microsoft and read up on it and install. The Windows Operating System is like Swiss cheese and needs to be patched month in month out.
