How do I stop NIS making a desktop shortcut when it updates?

Every so often, after updating, NIS makes a new desktop shortcut. I don't want it doing this, yet I can find no option to turn it off. How do I do so, or is this another one of NIS's awful un-stoppable features like the installation of that crap toolbar?

Re: How do I stop NIS making a desktop shortcut when it updates?

Hello GarethWallace and welcome!

There is no option to not create a desktop shortcut.

By default, Norton installs a 'global' desktop shortcut in one of the following locations depending upon your operating system:

(Win7)  C:\Users\Public\Public Desktop

(XP)  C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Desktop

You will have to set the Folder Options to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" (Control Panel > Folder Options > View)

You can delete the shortcut icon from one of these locations and it should not return upon restart.

I do not know if that will prevent a new shortcut from being created after an inline update, but you might give it a try.

Sorry that I could not have been of more help.

Thank you for your help. That folder is empty, I just checked it. The shortcut reappears about once a fortnight after NIS updates. Is there really no way to turn this feature off?

Sorry, but there is no option regarding the desktop shortcut.

If you feel this is an important feature for future products, you can post your thoughts in the Product Suggestion Area.

Re: How do I stop NIS making a desktop shortcut when it updates?

Gareth,

I don't think I've ever seen my Norton create a desktop shortcut except on Download of installation files using the Download Manager and on installation of a new copy.

I just had a version update to 19.7.1.5 that completed after I rebooted the PC but without me doing a manual update and it did not place an icon on the desktop .... I delete the one that comes when you first install since I have the Gadget as well as the icon on the Task Bar.

What version of Windows are you using?

[ Edited ]

This has never been an issue with me. The only time a shortcut is placed on my desktop, is when first installing a new program. 9 times out of 10 I just delete the shortcut. The only way it will re-appear is if I put it back on. Start menu>Programs>Send to>Desktop>Create Shortcut. I'm running XP, so maybe things are different. In the case of NIS 2012, the first time years ago when NIS was first installed, it placed a shortcut. I just deleted it. Since then, the only time it does is in the case of a new engine.

For me that was around 7 this morning. It updated to 19.7.1.5. It placed a shortcut which I deleted. The next time won't be until the next NIS engine update. I will delete it again.

Re: How do I stop NIS making a desktop shortcut when it updates?

Every time there is an engine update, a new folder is created with the engine version as the name.  The newly installed desktop shortcut points to the uistub.exe which resides in the new engine folder.  Any old shortcut on the desktop would be replaced.

My shortcut is moved by me off the desktop into a folder on the desktop for organized structure.  Since the old engine folder and its uistub.exe no longer exist, that moved shortcut is no longer valid.

By the choice Norton makes in creating and naming the folder with the engine version, a new desktop shortcut must be created.  The power to edit the shortcut should reside in the hands of the user.
