Why have you still got NIS 2006 instead of NIS 2009? :-)

The old antivirus engines are no longer able to keep up with the new malware.  While your definitions may be up to date, you are not getting the best bang for your buck.  It is recommended that you upgrade for free to the newest version to get the maximum protection.  If you decide that you would like to take advantage of this, please contact us for a link to the new version and instructions on how to successfully download and activate the new product.  Because your Norton is so old, it takes a little more care.

If you decide to update from Nis 2006 to NIS 2009, do not install NIS 2009 over NIS 2006 - registry entries are still left after NIS 2009 removes 2006 and can lead to trouble later on. Instead, you may want to follow the instructions below:

1) Print out your NIS 2006 key and Norton account information; also, save both to Notepad for later reference. I know that NIS 2007 users can upgrade for free to NIS 2009. I don't know about NIS 2006 (=I don't know if you have to buy a new product key or can use your 2006 one)

2) Save NIS 2009 package to desktop

3) Save Norton Removal Tool to desktop

4) If you've got other security software installed, deactivate it. By all means.

5) Create system restore point

6) Close all windows and programs (except for NIS 2006). Disconnect from internet by yanking out cable

7) Right-click on Norton Removal Tool icon (in Vista) and run as administrator. Do not do anything during the deinstallation process. Let the tool reboot the computer

8) Run the tool again. Yes, it is better to run it twice.

9) After the computer has rebooted, deactivate all programs again, right-click NIS 2009 installer icon and run as administrator (in Vista), let NIS 2009 install

10) When NIS 2009 wants to connect to the internet, plug in the internet cable again and type in your product key (copy-paste from Notepad) when NIS 2009 demands it

11) Run LiveUpdate

12) Reboot

If you run into any problems, come back here to the forum, and the gurus and techies will help you out.

You can update to NIS 2009 for free if you've got NIS 2006 or later. Just make sure you save/write down your Norton account information and your NIS 2006 product key to activate NIS 2009, if you decide to install it. NIS 2009 will need your Norton account info for synchronisation, i.e. it will connect to your account to take over the number of days still remaining on your subscription.

Re: How do I turn on intrusion prevention for Norton Internet Security 2006

Thank you for your help. I down loaded NIS 2009 and it works great the problem with the intrusion prevention is now solved. When I down loaded NIS 2009 the software removed NIS2006 and everything just worked.

Lets hope Norton can do the same with Ghost.

Thank you to one and all who have helped me with my problem.
