AllenM "There is not a single anti-virus company out there who guarantees a user won't get an infection" Where did I say that ? I never said that, why would you suggest that I did ? I said Norton was no longer the best, just look at the posts on this forum and tell me it is.  You pay your money and when things go wrong you have to depend on the whims of the forum volunteer. I expect the assistance of the heavy brigade when I've parted with money, and it needs to be prompt and effective, no hanging around these forums for days at a time waiting to be summoned. AllenM  "In some instances a company might assist in malware removal for free" Now that I did say, I definitely did say that. This idea that folk need to go on bended knee to get their computers fixed or cough up a bit extra is farcical. That is why I'm no longer a NIS 2012 user and why you are unable to supply me with a link to a reputable independent test covering the last 6 months which places Norton at the top. I'm not talking about tests done by the usual fan mags, I'm talking about the proper independent guys, you know who they are. Well it's over to you friend, prove me wrong.

Hi Kelly,
I now use a Chromebook as my main machine, and a Windows 8 laptop for the unimportant stuff. The Chromebook needs no additional security, and Windows 8 arrives with its own. My third a aged desktop is no longer relying on NIS it having seen the nightmare that is this forum had a breakdown and needed to be retired.

Hi scarfy,

 

Even though it is very difficult for a user to wait on the addtional instructions, that is in fact what they must do in order to continue receiving assistance from the malware removal expert. Again I know this is very difficutl when someone just wants the malware off their computer but it is essential that they wait and not try to get ahead of the expert or do any second guessing... This means doing nothing beyond what the volunteer expert has instructed until you receive addtional instructions from that person.

 

People like Quads as you know are volunteers so they cannot guarantee a response time.

 

The other option unfortunately is to go to a paid removal expert where they are likely going to be with you pretty much constantly until the job is done.

I never said you did either. I said what I did because it seems you have an expectation that a company should remove an infection for free automatically. My point of saying there is "no guarantee...." is simply that if a user does in fact cause an infection to occur why should the company have to resolve it for free?

 

As far as independant test results go Norton has been consistently rated at or near the top of the list in almost every "real world" test. Having said that I have not looked up any "recently" so I'll do some research for recent test results.

 

I'm not here to argue about this topic and I won't go down that path.

Regarding the independant AV tests and why Norton is not listed on it recently. I think the following post will answer your question:

I knew this sounded familiar but I just had to go back and search for it, which only took about 2-3 minutes to find! :smileywink:

 

Frankly I cannot blame Symantec one bit for being opposed to these static (non real-world) tests!

Personally I would say "disconnect the Ethernet cable from the computer" would be the safest. This would prevent being infected by anything else online while the user is waiting for the next set of instructions. Powering the computer down could change things which "might" make continued troubleshooting more difficult.

 

Let's see what Quads has to say about this though.
