Hello,

I own NIS 2007 but am using a 15 day trial version of NIS 2008 on my new computer.

Under the 2007 version, I could right click on the icon in the task bar and choose to block or allow internet access and disable/enable autoprotection.

I see that I can enable/disable auto protection with a right click, but how do I block internet access?

Please tell me how to do this. 

Is this feature gone from the 2008 version? If so, I am deeply disappointed. I do a lot of testing and that feature is critical to me.

WOW. It was removed? Why in the world would you guys do that?! I cannot tell you how many times a worm might have slipped through or something suspicious may have occurred and all I had to do was to RIGHT CLICK and terminate all Network traffic. Now I will have to reach down and unplug the cable itself?!

Even Zone Alarm has this wonderful feature. As nice as NIS 2008 seems to be and has some extra features, I just am amazed that something so convenient, simple and necessary was removed yet the whole ccAPP shutdown issue still remains an annoying hallmark of Norton products. 

Looks like either the BitDefender 2008 Suite or the ZoneAlarm Suite is the way I am going to go. At least I did not purchase NIS 2008.

Only for block traffic?

The current firewall and anti virus are reasonable good

I agree. I used that "Block Traffic" feature all the time. (At least once a month if not more.) It came in very handy when I tried to troubleshoot suspicious activities on the computer or when I simply didn't want my internet up and running. (Isn't abstinence the safest protection?) I'm surprised they removed it. It seemed like a simple and convenient feature to have. It couldn't have been very buggy or taken up much code. Why remove something so simple?

hi superlebowski... never used it myself - always preferred the "hard stop" of disabling the network connection (right-click / disable). if you ever thought you'd been compromised and the FW was on, how much confidence would you have that it was really blocking?

ps - what kind of problems did you hit with ccapp? from what i've read, those are most common when installing over the top of an older version - was that your condition?

hi BellJonez - i'd recommend a more robust tool for tracking down spurious network activity... something along the lines of process explorer.  save you a ton of time :)

It is not just about being compromised. It was also about convenience.

Example -

I want to play a few computer games. I find the best performance comes from shutting off any security tools...such NIS A/V especially!

So I right click and it is done. Also, I would not want to allow any firewall traffic or net access so I could right click and end that problem too.

It was just very nice and convenient. I cannot imagine ANY good reason why a SECURITY company would remove simple and effective SAFETY features?! lol The whole point of having a software firewall is to be able to use it to BLOCK traffic. lol If I cannot manually block the traffic...then there goes a huge chunk of functionality.

I bet the programmers did a little too much overthinking.

in control panel, goto  network connections. right click on your Local area connection that you use for your isp.

select create a shortcut on desktop.

right mouse click on Local area connection select proberties and show icon in notification area when connected.

now you can just right mouse click and select disable your internet connection at will.  works for me.
