Re: How to get a product key

Phil_D,

I'm using Vista and only the first method can be used here.  No key in the registry; or at least, not where you said to look.  Also, the 'key.txt' file is not found; just the My Documents file.  This maybe part of the new product security but also maybe left over from NIS2008.  I did not use that version.  Just FYI....

That is because Vista does not use the same path as XP, no "Documents and Settings" folder (different from "My Documents" folder).
I am trying to remember but instead of "Documents and Settings" look for the "All Users" folder.  I think inside of "AppData"

Just trying to point out that in Vista the path to the text file is (default location that is) C:\Users\<user name>\Documents\Symantec\ .  This is the same as going to My Documents (in Vista).  However the file is not named key.txt.  The registry entery does not exist in Vista for a 'virgin' install (never had any other previous NIS versions installed).

This was / is just to help you out as I see that you run XP Pro as your main OS.  Appeciate all your help on the forum and was just trying to arm you with info on Vista, that's all.  Have a great day.:smileyhappy:

Re: How to get a product key

Hi dbrisendine,

Thanks for the extra information; I can always use enlightenment.

You've noticed that I do prefer XP, but I'm going to search my Vista Home Premium machine to see if I can locate it in the registry.

Hi Eraserone,

For best results, contact the Symantec Customer Services through this LINK immediately(chat), they can help you in getting the product key back. Norton Account is a place to save the product key after installing the product through the process of activation. It won't have any of your purchase information. If you have purchased from Symantec Store and have your order number/password, use the Symantec Order Status page to see the status of your order.
