IE8 Google search -- green check marks gone

Running the latest version of NIS 2020 on Windows 7 64-bit.

Today I did the 15 Microsoft Updates for this month's patch Tuesday. I notice now that when I run IE8 and use Google, the green check marks (or any indicator) that indicate a Site's Safe Web status which used to be present are no longer there. The green check marks are present when I search using Yahoo or if I run Firefox and use Google.

Wondering if anyone else is seeing this?

Re: IE8 Google search -- green check marks gone

Hi Duane,

Nice to see you here -- I missed your earlier posts.

I just switched from XP that I still use daily for the moment to WIN 7 32 bit Home Premium that has IE8 and checked a google search on [ cheap software ] and it came up OK with the Safe Web check marks including on (?) so it's working here on 32 bit.

But I just had the warning of Windows Updates so they are not installed yet.

I'll now switch over to WIN 7 64 bit Enterprise that I have a trial version and see if it is any diffeerent and then let the Windows Updates come down and see if it's any different.

That means closing down this OS so I'll send this now and come back shortly.

Hugh

Hi Duane,

Welcome to the Norton Community. Can you confirm your version of NIS is version 17.7.0.12? This is found in Help & Support > About.

Also while we're waiting for Hugh, please confirm that the Norton Add-ins are enabled. Please click on IE > Tools > Manage Add-ons.

Then scroll down to the Symantec section. There should be 3 plug-ins and all should be enabled:

Norton Toolbar

Symantec NCO BHO

Symantec Intrusion Prevention.

Please enable any that are not alread enabled. Then restart your browser and see if there is any change.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

I have the same problem, too, with the add-ons and NIS settings correct.

Re: IE8 Google search -- green check marks gone

Duane,

Safely back from my adventure:

1 -- WIN 7 Enterprise 64 bit IE8 as I arrived: Googled on [ cheap software ] and got the SafeWeb symbols but they did take about 5 seconds to appear. This was without what Windows Update announced as 18 Updates of which one was optional (NET) so it had not had the last Tuesday updates.

2 - I then applied all except the optional one (NET 4) and afer rebooting got the same result that the symbols appeared after a short delay.

3 - Then applied the optional NET 4 upgrade and repeated Google with same result that the symbols appeared but after a longer delay, perhaps 10 - 15 seconds.

Maybe it's that super advanced NIS 2020 that you have installed! <gdr>

Could you jusst confirm the version ID of your NIS from Help / About in the format nn.nn.nn.nnn

Hi Folks,

Very interesting what I just discovered.

First I'll mention that my default search engine is Google. When I do my searches by typing in the search string directly in the URL address bar I get the site safety symbols as expected.

However, if I first navigate to google.com and then type in the search string directly from the Google site I do NOT get the site safety symbols! :smileysurprised:

Would the two of you be willing to try something? Please set Google as your default search engine as follows:

http://www.google.com/support/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=463

Actually with IE 8 you have to click Settings under the Search area. Then you will see a list of available search engines. Left click to highlight Google and click on Set As Default at the bottom right.

Then type your search string directly in the URL address bar and see if you get the site safety symbols. If you do, then navigate to google.com and try the search again from the web page.

Thanks very much.

Best wishes.

Allen

Re: IE8 Google search -- green check marks gone

Baja,

Can you please confirm the usual details of your installation:

What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Name and Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn

If you have the COMCAST version of Norton 360 / Security Suite and not the normal commercial version please be sure to tell us.

If you get any error messages please give the exact wording of them as well as any other background that could be helpful.

Thanks -- just want to make sure ....

And also please answer any other questions that others may have asked of Duane.

Further update. If I hit refresh enough times after entering the search from the google web page, I can get the site safety symbols but a couple of times I had to hit refresh at least 6-8 times!

On each iteration I waited at least 30 seconds to see if the symbols would load but they did not.

EDIT: Update, I do NOT see the same problem with Firefox 3.6.8.

Once I get the results from those on this thread to see if the problem is the same as I am seeing, I will notify Symantec.

Allen

I'll check out the rest tomorrow but have you tried waiting to see if you are getting the delay that I see and mentioned in my second message to Duane?

Hi Hugh,

As I mentioned earlier I am waiting at least 30 seconds + each time. It does not ever come up. In fact the last time I let it sit there for 10 minutes while I was formulating a couple of post replies! :smileysurprised::smileytongue:

Again the difference is that you can enter your search string in two different ways:

Directly from the URL address bar (with appropriate default search engine configured)

Navigate to google.com and enter search string from the web page.

It is the latter that does not work and the problem does not appear to happen with Firefox.

I need to see how this compares with what Duane and Baja are doing.
