Allen:
BTW: This is the situation on both my computers with the following:
Windows 7 (32) with all the latest patches, etc
NIS ('normal') 2010 17.7.0.12 with all the latest downloads
No error messages
What I meant with "the add-ons and NIS settings correct" is I did everything you suggested above and even turned off the 'Enhance Search Engine Results,' ran IE8, then turned it back on and re-ran IE8.
You're right- I get the green checks with the 'non-direct' entry into Google, but not from the default home page.
Thanks for looking into this!

Hi Baja,
You are most welcome and thank you for the results. If you have Firefox, would you mind checking with that also?
Thanks very much. ![]()

I don't have Firefox.
I'm sure Duane is right about the timing, but I didn't notice when the green checks disappeared.

Hi Folks,
Another Guru has reproduced the same problem. I have apprised Symantec of the issue and will update later when I have any news to share.
Best wishes.

Yes, it looks like something changed on the Google search page that is thwarting our annotations. The problem seems very variable. Different machines and different search terms are displaying different results, but it is wide spread. We haven't yet exhaustively tested different versions of our products, but we're pretty confident that all versions of Norton products will experience this problem equally.
Stick with us. We're looking at this.

Today I did the 15 Microsoft Updates for this month's patch Tuesday. I notice now that when I run IE8 and use Google, the green check marks (or any indicator) that indicate a Site's Safe Web status which used to be present are no longer there. The green check marks are present when I search using Yahoo or if I run Firefox and use Google.
Wondering if anyone else is seeing this?
Oh yes indeed, there are others seeing the Safety Green Checkmarks being gone; it's a now and then thing if the checkmarks show up at all.
Sometimes their appearance may be forced by shutting down Google, turning it back on, and re-running search for whatever you need.
Also yes, it's a P I T A. Too bad that the dropping of service and updating of I E 7 as of July 13 2010 meant that computer owners had to accept the I E 8 if they wanted to be kept updated, safe online, and receive service.
This most recent annoyance is just another indication of how much those of us who buy and use computers are appreciated. Not.
Thank you, Duane_White, for bringing up this subject. For longer than was comfortable, I was worried that my computer I can't afford to replace should this one fail was on its' way out.
Now I'm wondering whether Google or someplace couldn't have couldn't have placed at Google home page an advisory re: Green check marks and the possible variances of the appearance of the marks.
Too easy, I suppose, or maybe it was just amusing to imagine we 'netwanderers looking for a certain item or subject and "leaving empty-handed" because of the sudden absence of the check marks. And all because we were pushed into accepting I E 8. : - / .

Edit, a few minutes after replying to Duane_White:
I see that several people make reference to using Norton Symantec, accepting Norton tool bar, etc.
I do not use NS, am quite happy with the non-Norton tool bars...and still had the 'No green check marks' problem.
Sometimes they show up, sometimes they don't. It's a coin toss.

The version of NIS is 17.7.0.12
The three add-ons that you mention are enabled.
Searching from the address bar yields an Open DNS response and I do use Open DNS.
I have since noticed, however, that while doing a Google search in IE8 yields a list of search results with no safe web markings, if I choose one of the hits and go to that page, then use the back arrow to go back to the results list, the green check marks are now there.

FWIW, using Google.com, I could not get they safe web symbols by refreshing, but something I found very curious was that the Compatabiilty Button was not available, and the Compatability View under Tools, was grayed out. I did go to Compatibility View Settings and added google.com to the liust to use Compatibility Mode and it did not change anything while on google.com. Using the IE search did in fact show it in Compatibility View.
.
I guess I should add that occurs on Win 7 64 bit system and the same on XP SP3
.
I have a similar return of symbols doing what Duane suggested.

Allen,
Sorry I missed that you had dealt with timing ....
