HELP! I noticed that my searches were getting hijacked (click on a result, unrelated page opens). I tried to open Norton Antivirus, but I got an error "beep" and it wouldn't open. I managed to get to Symantec's website, and I click on Virus Removal and downloaded "Power Eraser". It spent some time with the download, then it wanted a reboot, which I did. Now all I have is the BSOD, with error "c000021a Fatal System Error" and "status oxc0000034". I have tried starting in safe mode, etc, but I am getting no where! Before the "Power Eraser", apparently, I could have manually removed files and malware. Now what? HELP!

Unfortunately, redirects and browser hijacking are some of the symptoms of a rootkit. Norton Power Eraser is not recommended for these types of infections because it is simply too easy for users to check off whatever it finds and tell it to fix it. With rootkits that infect crucial Windows files, Norton products can only delete the infected files, which does not preserve the useability of the machine.
I think that if you are willing to work with them, the free malware removal forums will be able to advise you how, and with what tools to get your machine bootable again. Bleeping Computer is very backed up with many of the same infections, so the others may be somewhat faster. It is going to take some time.
Let them know about the redirects, and the loss of boot.

Sigh,
No matter how many times I have warned about Norton Power Eraser (NPE) and it's danger with certain Malware and the fact myself and Symantec tested. People still decide to try NPE and look what happens, or gets told to try NPE.
Sigh
