Hello:-,
A friend of mine wants me to install NIS 2011 on his computer via disc.
He's running XP SP3 with NIS2010.
The reason for this is that he's using a very slow dial up internet connection that would take all day ( you have to stay there and watch it or the service will kick you offline if you don't indicate that you're still using it by pushing a button) and he can also have a copy of the program on CD to use if has a problem at some time in the future.
So, my questions are:
1. Can you install 2011 from disc on top of the 2010 ( just as you do on your normal upgrade via an internet download) without any problems?
2. Would it be best to use the new keycode with the new disc, or just put in his old one which has about a week left on it? Or does this even matter?
Opinions on the path of least foreseeable problems would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi itsme:
I would suggest that you make sure that your friend has updated Norton to the latest version of 2010, which is 17.8.0.5 just to make certain that it is as up to date as possible. It should install over top as well on the disc as on the net. He will still likely have one large download of definitions that he has missed.
Also make sure that there are no problems or glitches with his presenty version.

itsme,
Is the NIS 2011 disk you plan to use a store bought copy -- it is in the stores now -- or one you have made recently from the Norton website:
New NIS 2011:
Click on this link -- NIS 2011This will download a single file of around 90MB which you should save on your hard drive where you can use it again if necessary -- Do not select Run but use Save when asked and remember where you put it!Click on this link -- NIS 2011 Netbook Edition if you want the Netbook Edition of NIS 2011 -- the KEYs are not interchangeable between the two versions of NIS.
The file you would get from there will be more uptodate than any retail disk -- you can put it on a thumbdrive if that is more convenient for you. Note that those links go to the US/CAN site and get the en version which is used in the USA/Canada and also in the UK and Australia I believe -- if you are elsewhere then tell us and someone can give you the correct link.
But as delphinium has said you will still have a fairly massive download to update the latest definitions and some fixes.
You can't bring the computer to your place, or somewhere with hispeed internet can you?

Hi Huw,
I'm assuming the NIS CD version is the regular NOT netbook edition. The netbook edition comes with a thumbdrive (at least it did).

I don't think they have the technology yet to download thumbdrives from the link I gave. The OP is dealing with a friend's computer and I am dealing with the OP.
Please read the background before posting.

Hi itsme,
One minor correction to the above. When your friend does enter the new product key he should not wait until his current subscription actually expires because once it expires it is no longer protecting him.
Rather, he should wait until the last day or two before his current subscription expires before entering the new product key so that he doesn't lose more than a day or two on the current subscription.
Any missing days missing as a result of entering a new product key will usually be credited back by visiting Customer Service. This is the link for USA/Canada and he can change the language if desired from there.
Best wishes.

Thanks for all of your advice/opinions.
The CD that I'm referring to was ordered from amazon.com as we got a good price, so it will have it's own key code if we choose to just let the other one expire. That's why I asked if it would be better to use his present key code ( if we don't let it expire) or just plug in the new one which will come with the program, or does it even matter?
I guess I could have attempted to download the program from the internet and perhaps saved it to desktop ( so it doesn't overwrite my present program in program files!) or somewhere else if it would let me, or maybe even had tried to just burn it directly to CD, etc. But I didn't have a URL until this post to try that.
I did think of just bringing his computer over here and plugging it in to my router and upgrading the program and subscription from here, but he has a desktop with a CRT monitor, keyboard, etc. It would have been a mess moving all of that here, then hooking it all up, which would have everything stacked and in a mess here with the area requirements. If he had a laptop, that would be perhaps the way to go, but not a full desktop system like I have. LOL
Yes, we plan to wait a couple of days or so before his current subscription runs out before installing and activating the new program.
As far as updating the 2010 that he's presently using, he uses Live Update at least one per day, so that's pretty well kept up to date ( but I'll check to be sure.)

HI itsme,
You don't need to install from the CD at all. With NIS you are paying for a subscription and not the actual software so the product key you get is not tied to a specific version of NIS. You are essentially just purchasing a product key which can then be used to renew your subscription.
You should instead download the latest version of NIS 2011 from the links provided in this thread.
Also, running Live update only updates the current version which is installed. For example if you have NIS 2010, live update will ensure that you have the latest version of NIS 2010 but it will not update you to NIS 2011 automatically.
So for that you need to do the upgrade yourself. From NIS you could go to Help & Support > Get new version and this would allow you to update to NIS 2011. Or easier still is to use the links from this thread to download the full version.
Hope this clarifies.
Best wishes.

Itsme,
Thanks for the additional background.
Allen has answered your queries but I'd just add that when you use that link to download the complete one-piece file for NIS 2011 you should choose Save and not Run then you can tell it where to save it -- if you have Windows 7 I think it defaults to a folder in the "Library" called Downloads but on other systems I create a folder called Internet Downloads and point it there. As long as you remember where you put it ....
You will only begin to install the new version when, if you Save, you Run the downloaded .exe file.
So if you take a copy of that file to your friend on a thumbdrive or otherwise you can Run it there and it will install over the top of the NIS 2010 that he has and use existing KEY and the remaining subscription days.
Then you must run LiveUpdate and reboot between runs until it tells you that you are fully uptodate -- and unfortunately there will be one fairly large download but this cannot be avoided.
Then a day or so before the old subscription expires (and it will nag you increasingly during the last 30 days) just click on Renew Now and enter the new KEY that you got from Amazon into the box that comes up and there you go with a new 366 days. It won't add on the day or so that was not used up but it's so much simpler not to worry about that!
I hope that clarifies the last details .....
