Re: Is Phishing Protection working in Firefox 3

My only concern is this:  I don't remember reading a definitive answer that the patch was out yet;  A non-Symantec person said there was an update.  I elected to try it out, but that decision was mine.

If anyone elected to install brand-new software before a tested patch was released by Symantec... Well that's on us, frankly.  They appear to be giving frequent updates on status, which is appreciated.

Re: Is Phishing Protection working in Firefox 3

CountryGuy/All,

A Firefox3 patch was posted earlier this week but it was removed due to some of the issues mentioned in this thread. It is important to note the complications were limited to a very small percentage of users who received the patch.  We have identified the issue and are working on a new patch. I do not have a timeline to give you yet but expect to have one in the next 48 hours.

For those users who received the patch without any complications, your Norton Toolbar will be fully functioning with Firefox3.  For those users on this forum who did experience an issue, we are reaching out to you individually to assist you in retrieving your ID safe data.  It is important to note that in all cases we have been able to successfully restore the data.

Thanks,

Bill

Re: Is Phishing Protection working in Firefox 3

Folks,

Do you think it is really stupid and absurd that users has to go thru all the trouble unistalling NIS 2008 15.06 and download and install again version 15.5.  Really I cannot believe that Symentec cannot use live update to get the patch for FF3....or perhaps they are too lazy. Or not intelligent enough.

What if a user has Norton Ghost and SystemWorks, they need to remove those too.

As you all have mentioned that Symentec should notify all users of this....more importantly, it should have notify users via their website.  Hopefully they are smart enough to inform their users via their website on the fix to FF3.

Otherwise, I shall boycott the use of NIS2009.

the FF3 patch does come via live update.  you don't need to uninstall 15.0.whatever to get 15.5 just go to http://www.symantec.com/newnis and download it and install it on top of 15.0

the update to 15.5 costs you nothing if you have a valid subscription and is really pretty painless.

Re: Is Phishing Protection working in Firefox 3

I think we need to be a little sympathic here, but I work for a software company so maybe I am a little bias.

What is frustrating is the lack of info about what setup causes the problems.  I don't have FF3 but have the problem and it also exists in IE7.  There are so many conflicting postings about what causes the problem and what to do or not to do to resolve it.

I hope that we can get some clear guidance soon as to what configuration the error occurs in, expecting a timeline for a fix is not a realistic option, until they have managed to complete their investigations, there is no way they can estimate the resolution time, so patience is required from all.

Whilst this is extremely frustrating for all of us, I am sure they are working frantically to get the matter resolved.  It is such a shame that this tool was so effective I did not make a note of my Login details elsewhere and I simply should know better!!!!! I can't blame anyone else but myself for that :(

Thank you for the link.  What I am afraid is that if I reinstall 15.5.  It may caused more harm than good.  Considering that there are so much issues with the toolbar.

Thank you

I do not agree. For one thing, Symentec is one of the largest AV company in the world. They should have the decency to inform (via their WEBSITE, that the current NIS or 360 toolbar are not compatible to FF3. That way, they can "protect their interests". So it is at the risk of users insisted to "try out NIS toolbar with FF3.

They could at least also mentioned that a patch to update from NIS version 15.06 to 15.50. So, users can update as per their wish.

Also, It is common for user so "RUSH" into trying something new. That is human nature. So don't go blaming the human race for some thing that SYMENTEC should do.

I thank you.

Re: Is Phishing Protection working in Firefox 3

Agreed -- While I like their software, having an email list / rss feed we could join that lets us know of updates would be really helpful (even if it might be spammy, since there are multiple updates per day).  Should be relatively simple to set up, just a question of time on Symantec's side.

Maybe someone will see this and lay the suggestion in front of a Symantec manager :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Is Phishing Protection working in Firefox 3

[ Edited ]

I've known so many people who have dropped Norton over the years. The biggest reason is it interferes with too many things, and slows down their computers. But their ad blocking issues that no one ever seemed to deal with was the reason why I had to keep them. I needed to see that anything square was going to be blocked. I had to see that verified by visa wouldn't work unless ad blocking was turned off. (which Jet Blue was glad to hear it wasn't due to customers not being able to figure out how it works)  The Major League Baseball site would have most of the front page not show unless ad blocking was turned off. It helped a friend of mine when I saw most of his website didn't show due to certain naming and size issues. So having the button is essential, especially for web designers.

Of course these things are still an issue as nothing is ever done for an older version. Only for the latest.

Do I like the product? Overall, yes. Is it hard to get around the issues? If you have time and know this forum is here, eventually you find your answer. But I agree with most that Symantec should be spending more time keeping their customers (all of them) informed of issues and fixes. That means you have to go beyond this forum. If my web hosting company can tell me when things are wrong, the fixes, etc and I never have to go to their site, then there really is no reason why Symantec can't send an email out to their customers when things like this happen. There are lots of options out there. The economy stinks. People aren't going to wait for very long before they go somewhere else.

Is the button essential? Yes. When you want to see what is actually on the web, you need the ablity to turn on/off certain controls while on the site itself. Both from a user and developer standpoint.
