Agreed -- While I like their software, having an email list / rss feed we could join that lets us know of updates would be really helpful (even if it might be spammy, since there are multiple updates per day).  Should be relatively simple to set up, just a question of time on Symantec's side.

Maybe someone will see this and lay the suggestion in front of a Symantec manager :smileyvery-happy:

I will certainly recommend this idea to the team, which sounds like a great way to keep customers informed. Thanks!

This thread is quickly becoming a "what I dislike about Symantec software" thread, and I would like to refocus the thread to the Firefox 3 update. Our team is currently testing the patch, but if you are interested in helping us, please send me a PM (private message - the yellow envelope in the upper right-hand corner of the forum) indicating you are interested. Thank you.

Dear Mr Weiss,

Can you blame us????? for using this thread to focus on someting else other then the subject.

If there aren't any "signal" from Symentec (ie:- LET USER KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM WITH FF3 AND TOOL BAR IN YOUR WEBSITE)....more & more users will van their anger.

Thank you.

Thank you

Speaking as someone who has been trying to help others here for a while now, it is common courtesy not to deliberately drift a thread away from its subject as you suggest when it is easy to start a new thread dedicated to what you want to say.

And in case you think that the problem with phishing protection is being ignored here, I just did a search on [Phishing Protection] using the excellent search box and it brought up 17 pages of links to individual messages which include those two words!

If you checked the messages here from the Norton Staffers [ red names] you would see that a fix is being worked upon.

Your venting is not constructive although it my satisfy you -- my general suggestion to friends who get upset is "Go kick a sheep" -- the sheep makes a satisfying noise and it does not hurt the sheep or your foot!

Re: Is Phishing Protection working in Firefox 3

All,

Given the level of activity and questions around the Firefox 3 patch, I wanted to provide a bit more detail about the situation. Early this week, we released a patch that was intended to support Firefox 3. The patch was live for approximately 18 hours. During this time a few customers that received this patch complained that their logins stored in Identity Safe started showing foreign characters. As a result of this issue, we immediately withdrew the patch. Users who did not receive the patch were not affected. After investigating the problem – we determined that it was caused by a change made in the way Identity Safe stores its configuration. The problem only affected a small percentage of Norton Internet Security 2008.5 customers – majority of whom had previously restored Identity Safe data backed up in a different user account or on a different machine. It could also occur if a user had reset an Identity Safe profile and then restored a profile backed up on the same machine.

For the small number of users who did receive the patch and experienced problems, we have developed a tool that fixes the problem. The tool is available for all customers who call Symantec Tech Support or send Tony (the Forum moderator) a Private Message via the forum. We have also sent emails with instructions to download and run the tool to customers who indicated they experienced issues via this forum.

We are currently working on a new patch that provides Firefox 3 toolbar/ID Safe compatibility for users of NIS 2008.5 (without any of the problems cited above). We do not have a firm release date yet but will reply to this thread once it is completed. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this problem may have caused and appreciate your patience and understanding.

Re: Is Phishing Protection working in Firefox 3

Dear huwyngr,

Nice knowing you & Thank you for your nice comment.

I am not trying to "drift this thread to some other subject"...I am merely trying to "make a point".  On the other hand, you're right to say that I ought to start a new thread regarding the "what I dislike about Symantec software".....I won't want to "get barred from posting"

Yes, without doubt the technical staffs at Symentec are "hard at work" to find the fix to the problem.  I also do not dispute that Symantec Customers Services has improve 110% from previous years.  Otherwise, I wouldn't be using NIS, Ghost, SystemWorks, Partition Magic.

I give them 2 thumbs up for their efforts to resolve the pending issues.

They should be rewarded.

Not to make matter worse, I apology to Mr Weiss & his team plus all at Norton Community for that remark.  Nevertheless, I still feel that Symentec should have the decency to warn users of the pending problems using Norton Toolbar and FF3.

Sorry, huwyngr...there are no sheeps were I live.  Just fish and million of Sea Monsters.

Thank you.

Hi Tony,

Thanks to you and all the support folk for working on this issue.

Providing software support is not for the faint hearted.  So far as I'm aware, it is generally not helpful if users spit at those who try to solve problems.  Ignoring the technical issues for a moment, who wants to go out of their way to help someone who is an oxygen theiving painful tool?

FF is not the only application or bit of software that has changed recently ... Microshaft and huge numbers of thir party plug-ins have recently changed.  Some plug-ins interfere with others at the best of times.  NIS is not a couple of lines of code. The toolbar (identity safe etc) are really impressive and by their nature complex (under the hood) tools.  I'd prefer a safe solid solution above one that stuffed up my day royally.

Maybe we might all take a collective deep breath and work the problem and not the person (company ... whatever)?

What can we do to help Symantec solve this issue?  It's probably fair to say our environments differ (perhaps a lot) so how can we get the environment info to Symantec quickly while protecting our privacy?

I'd be happy to participate in a beta program - customer feedback program - but don't know how to go about it.

Is there any way to track problem resolution easily?  For example, it wouldn't take much to pop a tool on my desktop that pops up a display whenever an issue I'm interested in is resolved OR a major (common / frequent) issue is resolved.  I would not mind if it 'phoned home' occasionally ... so long as my privacy was not invaded (being able to see what info was being collected would be helpful).

Work the problem folks ... or we may end up with self inflicted headaches :)

And yes, would really appreciate it if the toolbar / identity safe worked with FF 3 ASAP ... and am more than happy to help make it happen if I can ...

Thanks Tony :)

Re: Is Phishing Protection working in Firefox 3

Seamonster,

I'm glad you got my point.

If you study BillR's current post on this and the back history you will perhaps appreciate that they can't warn of a pending problem until they know about it and then it is not pending and that they have been very open about it in communicating what is happening here in the forum and by email and PM to those they know have the problem, which is not everyone using the combination of NIS and a newly released browser.

Sorry you don't have any sheep -- baaaaah!

Re: Is Phishing Protection working in Firefox 3

Thanks for all the understanding words. Agreed, bashing does not solve the issue. However Symantec charges each of us an annual subscription fee for a toolbar that is compulsory on installtion and does not work now in the second week. There are only two browsers supported. That FF3 will be available in June was known for some time and if Symantec simply failed to get their hands on this early enough to avoid this disaster that our security software is not able to provide us with exactly that - SECURITY. I appreciate that the guys are working hard on it but I have not received our lisences based on our intend to pay but only after we put the cash down, so why should I expect less from Symantec??? So for as long as Symantec makes this toolbar compulsory on installation they better be ready for the updates of the only two browsers they support. You got your cash - we deserve our product. They make us believe they support this browser but they don't if the approach is what it is right now. They could avoid that by simply stating support only for version 2... but they don't as they fear lack of sales. So get the job done!! We as loyal customers deserve more than this confusion. As of today which version of Norton works 15.0 or 15.5 with what update and when??? Why should we accept maybe one month or more with a major security flaw in our systems for a 12 month subscription we have already paid for. We love the toolbar, we have therofore paid more than competition charges so we should get what we have paid for. It is not tha a nwe version of FF comes out every 3 weeks or so.

Question : Will there be a patch for both version 15.0... and 15.5

Question : How much longer do we have to wait for a full working solution we have paid for??

Question : How much longer do we have to compromise our security caused by the provider we hev put our trust to?

Re: Is Phishing Protection working in Firefox 3

Not to add to the bashing, but why do I have to "accidentally" find out by digging through this forum about FF3 that LiveUpdate doesn't actually update the software.  How else was I going to find out that there is a NIS 2008 upgrade from 15.0 to 15.5 but through LiveUpdate?  I have neither the time nor the desire to check Norton's website or forums like this on a regular basis "just in case" there might be an update.  I'm only going to do that if I am actually having a problem (like no toolbars in FF3).

After all, isn't that what LiveUpdate is for?

Yes it stinks that a major browser upgrade wasn't supported correctly by Norton the day it was released, but I can at least use FF2 for now.  What more disturbs me is that I have to manually download and upgrade from 15.0 to 15.5, when I pay 50 bucks a year to have LiveUpdate keep me up to date automatically.

As a side note, I had to swith to use these forums in IE7, and the forums wouldn't work for me in FF2.  Clicking on Reply or Thread Options, etc, does absolutley nothing for me in FF2.

you do have a point about getting a notification that a manual update is needed.... right here the norton people said why it's a seperate update....  but your right how would we know to do it......

as far as FF2.... i'm using FF2.0.0.14 right now and i'm having no problem at all here....
