Is this "check your Norton subscription now" pop-up really from Norton?

I regularly get a pop-up that appears to be a Norton pop-up, and I am trying to determine if it is legitimate.   It says: "Security Information.  Check your Norton subscription now."

It says my subscription isn't active because I havenot connected to the Internet recently.  In fact, I have been and am connected to the Internet, and my subscription is up to date (as verified by checking my Norton account and my subscription data).  I checked to see if I have the most recent version of Nortin Internet Security (2012), and I do.

It asks what I want to do and has what purports to be a drop-down list, with the visible option beng "check your subscription now (recommended)."  I have never clicked anywhere in this pop-up, because I am afraid it is fake.

When I get this pop-up, Task Manager says that Norton Internet Security is running.

When I've googled the text of this pop-up, I have found nothing.

Can someone please tell me if this is a legit Norton pop-up and, if so, why I am getting it?  If it isn't a legit Norton pop-up, does it suggest my computer is infected?  (Norton Internet Security has detected no problems or infections in my computer.)

Thank you for your help.  The image of the pop-up is below.

My first  reaction is that you were right to query it because lack of internet activity would not affect your subscription (unless it had expired) although if it had said something about you were not protected .... then it would be more correct.

I've asked my colleagues if anyone knows about this so this really is an occasion when doing nothing is the right thing to do ...

If you want to check your subscription then click on Support / Subscription Status and that will verify that aspect.

So hang on and be careful.

Re: Is this "check your Norton subscription now" pop-up really from Norton?

I was just wondering if there is any new information about this pop-up.  I receive this pop-up on a daily basis.  I am unable to click 'X' to close it.  I have to log off my signon in order to get rid of it.  The problem is that I AM connected to the internet (obviously.)  I am very concerned that this is a virus because in addition to this pop-up, I am now receiving PC error messages telling me that Norton is not up to date but my Security is set to automatic updates.

What is going on?

Hello,

I've been having this same problem. Any word on if this is a real issue or simply a glitch? I'd really appreciate any help that can be given. I can't find anything else online that is similar.

Thank you

Check that your system date and time are correct. It could be Norton thinking you have not connected recently because it is seeing the wrong time on your system.

Hi Peterweb,

The time and date are correct, but my system's time does have a tendency to "drift" when my computer is in sleep mode. That could be the issue. The next time I see the pop up I'll check my system's time and date.

Thanks

Let us know how much this 'drift' is. The message you are getting would probably only show up after days, not hours.

The drift is usually only 3 hours. I have had the date shift as much as a full day, but this is rare and has not happened in a while.

If this is an older computer, your CMOS battery on the motherboard could be failing.

Just to confirm...

You have run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Try clicking on Support - Get Support to run  Autofix to check your installation and fix what it finds.

Re: Is this "check your Norton subscription now" pop-up really from Norton?

I ran autofix and it found one of the fixes to be "Protection Updates". Unfortunately, Liveupdate didn't finish because it says my service is expired. However, I renewed my service on August 28th, 2012 as is indicated in my account order history. I assume that something somewhere has gone wrong. Any ideas?
