Symantic has NOT "suspended delivering product updates for a few days." One of my 3 PCs running NIS 2012 was updated this morning (01/30/2012 at 7:32am).
Hi nikki605:
If you follow the link in message # 15 to kdump's post here, you'll noticed that kdump's comments about the suspended updates were posted 29-Jan-2012. That's two days ago, so I'm guessing that Symantec resolved the problem with the product updates before they resumed delivery today.
If you're using NAV or NIS 2012, there's also a new feature called Metered Bandwidth that you can use to control the updates delivered by Automatic LiveUpdates (see Symantec employee michaell's description here). If you chose the Critical Updates setting I assume that you would continue to receive the latest virus definitions, but I'm not certain if Symantec also classifies product updates as "critical".

My desktop was updated early the morning of 01/30, one day after the post you referenced, dated 01/29.
Moving on, I read the posts you linked to, but I must be blind, were can I find the Metered Bandwidth and Critical Updates option settings? I can't seem to find them. I am using NIS 2012 and this WinXP x86 SP3 desktop has been updated to ver 19.5.0.145.

Hi nikki605:
Sorry, my bad. The article here titled What New in Norton Internet Security 2012 has a section called Bandwidth Metering, but the NIS 2012 Product Manual (available for download here) refers to the feature as Metered Broadband Mode. I've been told this feature is also useful if you have a slow Internet connection with limited bandwidth (e.g., a home dial-up connection) and want to minimize the bandwidth consumed by the background idletime Norton tasks like Automatic LiveUpdates and Norton Community Watch.
The following instructions are adapted from the NIS 2012 Product Manual.
Notes:
No Limit - Lets Norton Internet Security use the network bandwidth that is required to ensure complete protection.
Critical Updates Only - Lets Norton Internet Security access the Internet only to receive critical product updates or virus definitions. If you have a limited Internet connection, you can select the Critical Updates Only option to ensure protection from different security threats.
No Traffic - Lets you block Norton Internet Security from connecting to the Internet. If you choose this policy, Norton Internet Security cannot receive critical virus definitions and program updates, which can lead to potential dangers and virus attacks.
Further information on Critical Updates Only vs. No Traffic can be found in Symantec employee michaell's post here.
I'm still using NIS 2011 so I haven't had a chance to actually try out this new feature.

I found it. Thanks for the additional info. I've left it set to the default since my ISP doesn't limit my bandwidth usage... yet.![]()
