Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

mo,

The 2009 products have a feature called "Full Screen Detection".  This feature will automatically turn on "Light Silent Mode" while the full screen application is running (such as Internet Explorer [hit F11], Windows Media Player, remote desktop in my case for the screen shot above, etc).  NIS/NAV will automatically turn this off once the application exits Full Screen mode.  You can enable or disable this functionality via Settings / Miscellaneous / Slient Mode and toggle "Full Screen Detection".

The difference between this "Light" version of silent mode, and manual silent mode (i.e. from the tray icon) is most of our background tasks are suppressed in the "Light" version, instead of all of them when you explicitly tell the product to enter Silent Mode.

NIS will log an event each time it enters or exits silent mode.  You can see all these events in security history by selecting "Full History" and then search for "silent".

Regards,

Mike

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

MikeO,

I'm on my 3rd day of evaluating NIS-2009 trial version and just sent a similar "Light Silent Mode" question to Norton Support via email.  Then, I Googled and found this message and joined the User's Forum.  I should have Googled first and joined the Forum first! :smileyhappy:

However, my specific question dealt with clearing the History log entries.  I have cleared all the individual History logs (firewall, intrusions, etc.) but "Recent History" and "Full History" still contain the "Light Silent Mode" and "Manual Silent mode" entries.  ALL other entries are gone, but the Silent Mode entries refuse to die!   I'm already cluttered with 74 entries:  37 "on" entries and 37 "off" entries!

Do you know how to totally clear or purge the Recent and Full history logs?  I've found the Norton "Logs" files in Application Data, but I don't know if renaming a .dat file in Safe mode will cause huge problems when I reboot.  Hope there's an easier and less risky way to clear out all history entries.

I'm sure I'll have more questions during my trial period, and plan on searching this forum first.

When I get a response from Norton Support, if it answers my question,  I'll post it here.

Thanks,

Marty

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

Hi Marty,

Currently we do not have an option to clear silent mode entries from history. Symantec is working on it and may be in the next build we may get that option.

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

Hi Vineeth,

Thanks for the quick reply.  Not being able to totally clear History is more of a nuisance than really a problem. So far, I like NIS-2009, but I've just started playing with it.

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

I heard back from Norton Tech Support via email.  The response reminded me why I stopped using NAV several years ago.  I'll just say that "you get what you pay for".  I paid nothing for the tech support, and that's what the answer was worth.

However, I still like the way NIS-2009 is performing. With a good product, not much Tech Support may be needed. :smileyhappy:

The Silent Mode history log can easily be deleted while booted in safe mode. All Silent Mode entries are deleted from the Full History and Recent History logs.  However, the next time you use Silent Mode,  a new log file is generated with more "sticky" entries that show up in the history logs.

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

=) symantec support has generally worked for me.

As for deleting silent mode entries in safe mode....do you just boot in safe mode, logon, and turn off? And what do you mean by your last sentence? Do you mean that silent mode entries will be gone from full and recent but silent mode logs are always kept under silent mode and cannot be currently cleared?

=\
