LiveUpdate AntiVirus Definitions Failure #8920.211

I purchased the NIS 2010 plus Norton Utilities CDs last year and just installed them this week (3/2011). As others have stated, the first  phase of the NIS LiveUpdate was fast. The second part of the download was slow, proceeded to about 4 MB of a 74MB file, then the Processing phase failed. AntiVirus Definitions Failure#8920.211 / Red Check...  Other components seemingly downloaded and have Green Checks.

My OS is Vista 32 bit. The computer was obtained new a while ago, but initially hooked up a year ago. There was never any Internet, virus or security protection software on the PC previously. My Internet service is a very slow dial up version.

I used the Online Virtual Help and called Symantec Live Support, rebooted and tried to overcome this problem several times. Symantec Live mentioned that my PC was broken and need tech help. I opted to update Windows by downloading 9 updates. I now notice that a red X that was over the Norton Utilities icon on the desktop has disappeared.

The installation of these product CDs seemed to have gone okay....If it is recommended that I go elsewhere and use a faster computer to get a Liveupdate download saved onto a flashdrive, etc., please tell me the steps to accomplish this

Thanks.

Hello SOShelp1

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

You can get the Norton Antivirus updates from this site on a daily basis, but they are large downloads. You can go to a place that has a faster connection and put the definitions onto a flash drive.and transfer them to your computer. Please find the version of the product you are using and whether it is for 32 bit or 64 bit.

http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/definitions/download/detail.jsp?gid=n95

You can if desired upgrade to NIS 2011 for free and we can give you the link for the latest program version. It will be a large download though to get the program onto your computer. If you are interested in this, please let us know. Your key from 2010 can be used for NIS 2011.

Please come back and let us know what you decide you want to do. Thanks.

Re: LiveUpdate AntiVirus Definitions Failure #8920.211

Thank you for this detailed information. I will try to access the update for my NIS 2010 and obtain the free 2011 upgrade that you mentioned. I will go somewhere I can use a faster computer system and save the download onto a flashdrive. It might be questionable that I can extract the NIS software and load it onto my computer, but I will try.

I am a novice with using the computer and I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to help me. I will write again to update my progress.

Re: LiveUpdate AntiVirus Definitions Failure #8920.211

Thanks for informing me that I am eligible for a free 2011 NIS upgrade. You and another forum member let me know this. I will pursue the upgrade with hopes that my slow Internet connection will permit it.

I appreciate your input. Thanks.

Re: LiveUpdate AntiVirus Definitions Failure #8920.211

Hello SOShelp1

You can use this link to download the NIS 2011 program.

http://www.norton.com/nis11

After you get the new version on your computer, it can be installed right on top of NIS 2010 provided you are not having any problems with the program. By using this link, you will be getting the latest version of NIS 2011. You will still need to use live update after you install it and reboot when necessary. With 2011, you have your choice to down load only the newest antivirus definitions and not ones that haven't been used lately. That might make the download of the antivirus definitions a little smaller.

Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.

Re: LiveUpdate AntiVirus Definitions Failure #8920.211

Thanks to you and Keylogger Crusher for helping me. I used the link you provided:  http://www.norton.com/nis11  I went to a faster computer away from home and downloaded the material onto a flashdrive. It was extremely quick!! When I got around to it today, I plugged in the flashdrive and the NIS screens came into view. I followed the prompts, performed the scan of 584,807 items, rebooted the computer, and received a "successfully" completed message and a green check mark over the NIS icon on my desktop. This was a really fast process on my slower dial up Vista 32 bit system.

I was thankful to learn that I was entitled to a free upgrade. Without the link and input from the community, I would probably be still struggling with this.

I no longer have a prompt telling me to run the Norton Utilities scan update (with a red arrow on it). I saw the Norton Utilities file being scanned during the upgrade process, so maybe it is good to go for now.

With much appreciation,
