Liveupdate completed with an Unknown error

[ Edited ]

Hello, i recently have been having a Problem with my LiveUpdate, you see, I am a Beginner at computers, so i dont know what to do when it comes to these things, On Sunday, i woke up to Norton Antivirus saying that my Virus and Spyware definitions ar not up to date you may be at risk for infection." and to fix it. i clicked Fix now. And i expected it to Update and we would be fine. But instead it told me That "LiveUpdate Completed with an Unknown error. I didnt know what it was. so i thought it was just a glitch or something. I ran it again. No luck. It says the Same thing everytime i run it. I run Quick scan to find anything that may be in my system. No threats. Full system scan, No threats. I dont know what this is. Am i still protected? or am i being fooled? so I ask from you here at Norton, Can you help me? thank you.

Re: Liveupdate completed with an Unknown error

Hi John_0696

First thing to check is that your system date and time are correct.

There have been some other users having trouble with LiveUpdates failing recently. Norton is aware of the issue and are working on a fix.

See Symantec employee Tony Weiss' post here  http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/2-Large-Back-To-Back-Virus-Definition...

To check your date and time, click on the date and time that are showing at the bottom right of your computer screen. A calendar and clock should come up. If the date or time is incorrect, make any necessary changes.

LiveUpdates can be affected by temporary server issues, either from Norton or any one of the internet servers between your computer and Norton. They usually clear up in a short period of time.

If you are still seeing constant update problems after a full day, come back here and we can check to see if your product has an issue.

Re: Liveupdate completed with an Unknown error

Hi John_069

Restarting the computer can be the solution for many problems so it’s worth trying this in future with update issues and other issues.

Restart the computer and check for Norton updates manually or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click, run live updates, and then recheck until there are no more updates restarting the computer as requested.

Yesterday i restarted the Computer after i ran a scan, No luck. it still had the little Exclamation point when it started up. a little bit ago it told me that my tVirus and Spyware definitions were not up to date. and Live Update still had an Unknown error when i ran it. Still i t=ried live update today and no luck. Am i still protected even with this Issue? Cause someone said that Nortons servers are screwing up?

Re: Liveupdate completed with an Unknown error

Hi John_0696_

The Norton product is protecting the computer its reporting that it is not up to date not being up to date doesn’t mean you have lost any protection.  I have automatic updates and pulse updates set to off and every 3 to 6 days or sometimes more the Norton product will go orange and then I get updates and sometimes it fails then I wait one day or so and try again.  To be safe when this happens just visits reputable sites and don’t click on links or ads.

Try running autofix by clicking the Norton icon, click support, click get support (or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click Get support) let it run then restart the computer.  It should tell you if any items where fixed.  If you get an error message about MBAM then just click on skip on the error screen.

Re: Liveupdate completed with an Unknown error

Let me know when it is fixed, so i can fix my norton. Im afraid that my computer is gonna break. I hope the problem is fixed soon. I cant afford to lose my computer. Also, what is causing the "unknown error" in liveupdate?
