Re: MS Security Advisory: Disable Desktop Gadgets

Hugh,

Thanks (I think).  I never meant to sound "neurotic".

Calls,

If Microsoft does send a a security update to disable the gadgets,  I will not be installing it.

It was a take on "Just because you are neurotic it doesn't mean they aren't out to get you ...." <g>

Re: MS Security Advisory: Disable Desktop Gadgets

This is all very confusing and irritating. (irritated at the issue not anyone here) Microsoft advises that gadgets should be disabled, yet how is the indivdual user to know that?
So I finally get close to adopting an attitude of less worry and Now Have to scan the microsoft advisories to see whats wrong?

Re: MS Security Advisory: Disable Desktop Gadgets

Yep!

I am in the same boat.  I will now have to read the tech notes on all updates before installing any so I don't inadvertently disable my gadgets.  This may not be enough though,  as the latest update to the Windows Update Engines showed.  This installed without any user intervention or notification on many systems.

THANK YOU MICROSOFT!!!  My next system may be a Mac. :smileymad:

Re: MS Security Advisory: Disable Desktop Gadgets

so are they saying the sidebar itself is a security vulnerability? Or are they saying some 3rd party gadgets going forward could be malicious?

Guess where I am also confused is this-

will this disabling come as a security update to install? Or will users have to manually run the fix to disable side bar gadgets? Microsoft answers forum seem to have no real answer, thus I post that question here.
also one of the side bar gadgets is from Norton

Re: MS Security Advisory: Disable Desktop Gadgets

I won't be voluntarily "disabling" or uninstalling any of my gadgets, or allowing a Windows Update which does so - if I can stop it. I almost always read the info on Updates anyway, so it won't be any more trouble to be on the lookout for some future Update that seeks to remove my gadgets.

Get used to not having gadgets. Windows 8 will not support them at all.

Re: MS Security Advisory: Disable Desktop Gadgets

Well I am quite used to the gadgets.  According to the posts here, it only applies to "unknown" gadgets.  I only use the pre-installed gadget (CPU / Weather) so I would be safe right?  :smileytongue: I didn't even use the Norton gadget.

If you look how long especially business users have been using XP I suspect Windows 7 will be around for a long time and so we won't have to get used to Windows 8 ...... <s>

Not that I am starting a flame war since I like a number of Windows 8 features and don't dislike the obvious ones .... but I've no plan to buy a touchscreen or a Windows 8 capable tablet ....

Re: MS Security Advisory: Disable Desktop Gadgets

this is so way messed up. On Microsoft Answers forum, seems to indicate it will come as a security update. I just ran check for Microsoft Updates and received nothing
