Making sure I have newest versions for NIS 2011

NIS 2011 v18.7.0.13
Vista OS w/Vista SP2
IE 8 browser

If I understand correctly, the newest versions for NIS2011 v 18.7.0.13
Norton Tool Bar is
2011.7.6.3

Norton Vulnerability Protection
10.1.0.68-2

1. Are those the newest versions for NIS 2011?

2. is Norton Vulnerability protection the same as intrusion protection?

3. Where in the Vista OS can I check to see that I have the updated tool bar and Vulnerability Protecion versions? What are the paths to those files?

Re: Making sure I have newest versions for NIS 2011

[ Edited ]

When I go to my IE8 browser and look at manage add ons, this is what I see as far as tool bar and intrusion prevention:

Tool Bar    2011.7.51         coieplg.dll

Symantec Intrusion Prevention    9.8.1.0      ipsbho.dll

So makes me think that because I do not have  a firefox browser  anywhere on my machine, is that why I don't have  the

Tool Bar  2011.7.6.3 and Norton Vulnerability Protection 10.1.0.68-2  versions?

What should be the proper versions of these when using IE8  browser?

Hello Calls,

The most recent version of NIS 2011 is 18.7.0.13

Toolbar version numbers and Prevention / Protection numbers will vary by browser.

For IE8:

Norton Toolbar: 2011.7.5.1

Symantec Intrusion Prevention: 9.8.1.0

For FIrefox:

Norton Toolbar: 2011.7.6.3

Symantec Intrusion Prevention: 10.1.0.68-2

Due to the rapid release schedule of Firefox, you will see those versions changing on a regular basis when required for new versions of Firefox.  The versions for IE do not require the same rapid version updates as the core product remains the same.

Norton Vulnerability Protection is the same as Intrusion Prevention. The terminology will vary between NIS 2011 and NIS 2012.

I have not searched for the paths to these files. If you have the latest versions, I would not be concerned with the paths.

Hope that helps.

Re: Making sure I have newest versions for NIS 2011

Thank you Phil. The Norton Tool Bar and Intrusion prevention versions you noted for IE8 are the same versions that show as enabled when I go to manage add ons in IE 8

Now interestingly, when I go to intrusion prevention history log, it shows the recent driver as version as 10.1.0.68 (no dash 2)

Re: Making sure I have newest versions for NIS 2011

I think you are dissecting the program too much.

Just because the individual component parts of the program are not labeled in a manner you think they should be does not mean there is a problem.  The individual pieces merge together to produce the customer facing version number.  The inner workings are for the Symantec engineers.

For example, if you installed NIS2011 when it was first released, by digging into the program files, you will still see the original engine number, 18.1.0.37 even though the program has been updated to 18.7.0.13.

C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_18.1.0.37

Don’t get too caught up in the details which are not designed to be analyzed by consumer.

Just have fun and know you are protected!
