Mapped Network Drives - Dropping out

Hi,

I have a client who has around 10x Norton Internet Security 2012 installs on computers with Windows 7 Professional.

They are an accounting firm who use MYOB and Handisoft files which reside on Mapped network drives on a data server. After installing Norton Internet Security on each of the computers each of the users are complaining about error's saying cannot connect to network drive which usually occur after the user has been away from their desk for 5 - 10mins. The dropouts happen usually ones or twice a day.

During this time Norton says idle time scans complete and the client loses their connection to the mapped drive and has to close down the application and start again (Handisoft is an accounting application that needs a persistent connection to the database).

Thinking it was the network drive being scanned I turned off network drive scan as one of the options and also added the network drive to a list of excluded drives.

This did not fix anything as the dropouts continued to happen, to prove that it is Norton and not an underlying network issue I uninstalled NIS from one of the computers and loaded up a free antivirus software, the computer in question stopped having dropouts and all is working well. The client still has 10 licenses for NIS2012 and I really want to use them and not waste them but how shall I go about tackling this issue?

Thanks

Hi robertwebster,

Can you please post the Scanned History logs here when this dropout happens?

Is this is happending in all the client machines which have NIS?

Is it is still scanning the network drive even after you have disabled the mapped network drives?

Please add those application(s) to the Exclusion list while it is doing the scan just to check if it fixes the issues.

Regards,

Re: Mapped Network Drives - Dropping out

Hi,

Where abouts in the program do I find the scanned history logs?

Yes this is happening on all clients which have NIS installed.
I haven't been able to find the log files so I can't tell if its still scanning the mapped drives.

I will try and add the application(s) to the exclusion list as suggested, and see what happens, thanks.

Re: Mapped Network Drives - Dropping out

I'm not sure where the logs are, but you might want to try changing the network trust on a couple workstations to see if it helps.

On the main program screen click "advanced" then click "network security map"

On the top section click once on the server to highlight it.

Then down below where it says "Trust Level"  click the edit button and change it to "full trust".

If the server has a fixed IP address, also click the box to exclude it from IPS scanning.

The last suggestion may help to increase the network traffic performance a little and I mention it because the 2012 version of MYOB runs poorly compared to previous years. (it needs all the help it can get)

I'm not sure where the logs are that Sagar was asking about unless it's the ones under "History".

Best of luck,

Dave

Hi Roberwebster,

The Logs can be found in the Advanced Settings in the Main UI -> Under Computer Protection -> History

In the Security histroy select the Full History and do the Export to a Text file or as *.mcf file so that we can analyse them and try to help you.
