Hi! SilverTongue,
I have read your post and have some suggestions on preventing a recurrence of your problem.
1.) Keep your security programs up to date. (I am sure you do.)
2.) Employ a good two-way firewall (I prefer to use NIS which has the AV and Firewall together)
3.) Do not put your ISP's IP Address in a trusted zone; which more commonly found is firewall software (ISP security is not always up to the challenge of removing malware)
4.) If you do get a malware infection contact Quads or Delphium for help they are very good at getting users out of sticky situations.
I would also suggest increasing the sensitivity of NAV to the most sensitive level; in NIS the setting is aggressive. You'll probably want to check to what the most sensitive level for your product is by asking other forum members for help in doing this. There is a slight performance impact but it is well worth it if you never see another malware infestation again.
I feel confident that others will most certainly have a different point of view; however I am providing a small list of things you can do to keep safe I am sure there is a lot more.
If I misspelled anyone's screen name my apologizes; I'll try to get right soon.
Thanks.

A small note of caution - setting NIS/NAV to Aggressive will increase your system scan time quite a bit and can lead to false positives being reported.

Hi! Mdturner,
I know it increases the scan times and false positives can be incured however; I believe that is where the Norton Community component of NAV comes into play. I would also suggest submitting items found that are believed to be legit into Symantec for analysis this helps them improve their software. I have come across false positives using the out of the box settings so the only real way to avoid false positives is to reduce the programs to the absolute minimum and more or less defeat the purpose of the software even being on the system in the first place. Given the option I'll take the false positives and longer scan times over getting a malware infection any day.
Thanks.

Hi! Stu,
I agree there is no such security program as to be considered perfect; there will always be false positives and the bad guys will always come up with new tricks to carry out the devious plans. However letting Symantec know about a false postive gives them the chance to improve their products. As I am often reminded there is always room for improvement.
Thanks.

Norton firewall also blocks malicious file download, that we can say drive by download malicious content, whether antivirus module detects or not. I am attaching a screenshot with this post, have a look on it and than see Norton blocked the file on first attempt to download malicious content..!! Norton is a great security software with enhanced user interface and the very best support that is this Norton community... As far as McAfee is concerned, good security suite with it's artemis technology, but there is problem of exclusion in home products, and there is no tamper protection in them, so if run registry cleaners or registry defrag programs than McAfee will be lost, Norton has the very best Tamper protection and the very fast scanning due to insight in 2009 products, but i must say McAfee's artemis is good and unbeatable..!!Norton 2010 is comming with same technology as insight..!!..
