Hi everyone, I've been using the Norton trial that I got with my Toshiba Satellite laptop. It's due to run out tomorrow, which luckily is my payday. I live by myself and I only have this lap top, nothing else online apart from a PS3(and we all know how serious Sony take their security now, don't we).

Taking into consideration that I am on a budget and that I have looked into other security outfits including McAfee, I would like any recommendations into what Norton product I should buy? My computer has been running slowly lately as well so do Norton have any deals for computer tune-ups(I've found Uni-blue a little wanting tbh). Bearing in mind my budgetal constraints, can I for instance buy the basic Norton anti virus package, then add say the computer cleaner service Norton appear to have at a later stage in a few weeks time for instance, when budget allows?

I hope I am posting in the right place and not stepping on any toes posting herein. Any advice and opinions would be welcome indeed before I go ahead with Norton tomorrow night. Many thanks. peace...

I went through the post. As I can see I would recommend Norton Internet Security 2012.

It is because of 2012 is the most efficient program available. I understand that your computer runs slow. Do you specifically want to go with Norton or would you be willing to try other product manufacturers free trials first?

I say this because at present and as mentioned frequently here in the forums.., Norton Internet Security 2012 is still very much considered to be in it's Beta stage! Personally I would not buy a product which still has so many bug's to fix and Norton do take a long time sometimes to get around to that. You only need look at all the issues here on the forums to form a clear picture of what you would be buying into. Don't get me wrong, I merely intend to give you an unbiased opinion. I do not work for Norton and therefore I would not recommend you necessarily buy Norton without first checking out the competition.

Norton Products when they do work are money well spent in my opinion but when they don't they're a pain in the proverbial to fix and often tech support are of no help either. I afraid I'm a bit of a 'brand hag' when I buy products and this has occasional let me down badly. I've been using Norton Products now for around 5-6 years and it's been a bumpy ride all the way! Like you I will be looking for something new next time around.

I hear many good reviews nowadays about Kaspersky Internet Security although I cannot vouch for this personally. You might also like to consider 'MalwareBytes' which is also extremely good and I use the free version of this alongside NIS when I want to find threats which NIS misses. You'll be surprised what it does find too!

I come from 5 years of KIS use....  (and the use of MBAM free edition - not real time - is anyway and always reccomended with the main antivirus).

There are some very good deals to be had on older versions of Norton Internet Security.  You can download and install a newer version and activate it with an older key.

Most computer tune up products are a waste of money.  They don't do anything that clearing your browsing history, dumping your temp files, and defragging the system doesn't do, and all of that is available in Windows.  Registry cleaners can mess up more than they fix if you are not very careful with them.

I don't see any point in recommending a change from Norton just because of people having problems with NIS 2012 when we can still give the link download 2011 and while some stores may still have 2011 on the shelves and maybe on sale, although the really good rebate deals from reliable sources are gone now, I suspect, with 2012 being on retail sale.

I have decided that Norton's anti-virus 2012 looks the best for me at this time and price. As I only have my, what has become precious to me, Toshiba lappy, and no other computers to speak of in-house, this product for now, seems the best choice.

I say "for now" because i'm wondering once I have purchased the product, if I see another Norton product that I wish to upgrade to, can I do so(it would be within 2 months tops). does Norton offer this flexibility in hand for use for their customers?

Also, entirely off-topic, and I hope I am not breaking any rules here, but I am a lover of words. I have a twitter account @theodisc and I do an etymology du jour. I pick an unusual word (for example farrow or even theodisc or lackadaisical)and give its origins and any cognates in other languages allowing for the ever precious tweet space. Please feel free to follow me. I try to choose unusual words or words that are becoming rusty thru nonuse.

Anyhow thanks Norton for allowing an open forum where folk can discuss the pros and cons of this or that product. I am rested assured that I am not just using a shill for Norton and it's products when I am usung this forum. The answering posts to my bewildered thread opener is testament to that.

Symantec does allow the user to ask for a refund of the product for up to 60 days. Sometimes also if you contact customer support, they can also perhaps do something for you.. When and if that time does come where you want to change your Norton product midstream so  to say, please open up another thread and we can help you at that time.  There would  be procedures to follow in order to do this successfully. Thanks Norton, I ended up getting the Norton 2012 AntiVirus package. I know it's all automated but when I had payed for the year's sub and was deinstalling McAfee's trial, the constant pop ups from them saying "are you sure you wish to uninstall this trial, you have not even begun it yet?" plus the 3 more seemingly more desperate pop ups I got from them just came across as desperate and gave me the impression that they are not all That. Call me smug, but I'm happy I chose an affordable option from you that looks like it fits in with what I want for me. Time of course will be the ultimate test, but many thanks again to the Norton staff whom posted and to the community whom gave me neutral advice on what to do. I'm happy with the price I payed, I know it's not foolproof(as a HUGE PS3 Gameur for over 3 years, Sony's embarrassing outage earlier this year due to their lax security proved that you can never be too complacent online, and that outage is one of the reasons I wanted to pay for more security than what Windows, my modem and Google Chrome can all offer.) Better to be safe than sorry hey?...)
