NIS 2010 Smart Firewall, Intrusion Prevention Cannot Turn on

A few weeks ago I downloaded and installed NIS 2010. No problem until yesterday. I now cannot turn on Smart Firewall or Intrusion Prevnetion. get Error: 3040, 10001 and 10017. I have uninstalled using the UINSTALL which came with the product and reinstalled but no change. I cannot access email through Outlook any longer. Get error 0x80042108, which one usually gets when the server is down or ISP issue or CCAPP is not loaded. ADSL is OK so its not that.

Re: NIS 2010 Smart Firewall, Intrusion Prevention Cannot Turn on

1) Copy your Norton key for safe keeping just in case you need it. You should not need this but it is better to have the key on hand than to need it and not have ready access to the key. You can find a copy of your currently installed key in My Documents\Symantec\Norton Internet Security_Key.txt.

2) Download the Norton Removal Tool from this link. Norton Removal Tool Choose the NIS2010 link and download the Norton Removal Tool (NRT) to your desktop. Directions are on the link page.

3) Download the latest version of NIS2009 from this link. Reinstall After Removal Choose the 'I have Norton Internet Security 2006 or later' link on this page. On the next page you can download the latest NIS2010 installation software. Save this file to your desktop also.

4) Disconnect from the Internet until your system needs the connection later in the process.

5) Go to START > Norton Internet Security > Uninstall and let NIS2010 uninstall itself. It will want to reboot the machine. Let it.

6) During the booting of your system, go to Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu is shown. Choose the Safe Mode option (no network or command prompt).

7) In Safe Mode, run the NRT tool. When the tool is finished, click on the Reboot to restart your system.

8) Let Windows boot into normal mode now.

9) Install NIS2010 by double clicking the file you downloaded and saved to your desktop in step 3.

10) When the installation asks for your key or says activating your product, reconnect to the internet then (plug your cable in or turn on the wireless card). [Note: The installation may not ask for your key and activate by using the previous key on the system. Your system will still need to connect to the internet at this point so updated definitions can be downloaded.]

11) Run the Live Update process manually until Live Update reports that there are no more updates to download, NIS2010 is fully up to date.

12) Reboot your system now to insure that any components updated during step 11 are loaded properly.

13) See if your error is fixed now.

Report back here with how this works for you.

Re: NIS 2010 Smart Firewall, Intrusion Prevention Cannot Turn on

Having not much success. I cannot run NRT in SafeMode because I have GoBack. Get error "SymNRT cannot contimue execution in Safe mode now!" GoBack detected. I cannot remove GoBack. I cannot Run NRT in normal mode because it fails to run due to Symantec WinFax Pro being installed. NRT tells me to remove WinFax via Add/Remove program, however, WinFax Pro does not exist there nor on my PC ... So I do not seem to be able to get any further along. I have SystemWorks Professional installed, with GoBack, and Save & restor. When I installed NIS 2010, Sym AntiVirus as part of Systemworks has been disabled. Any other suggestions?

Re: NIS 2010 Smart Firewall, Intrusion Prevention Cannot Turn on

Hi

That happened because System Works Pro includes NAV in the program. NAV is also included in NIS. Only System Works basic can be used with NIS. Unfortunately, System Works has been discontinued after System Works 12.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

Re: NIS 2010 Smart Firewall, Intrusion Prevention Cannot Turn on

OK. I manually removed SystemWorks, Norton Save & Rescue, GoBack. I could not get rid of old AntiVirus totally in Add/REmove. Still could not use NRT as Sym Winax Pro remnants are in Wondows Registry. I then Uninstalled NIS 2010 and Reinstalled.  it now works fine ... thanks

Re: NIS 2010 Smart Firewall, Intrusion Prevention Cannot Turn on

Sorry you had to go through all of that but I'm glad you have the product working correctly.  From reading your first post, I felt that the problem was a conflict in the installation somewhere and usually running the uninstall and the NRT will clean the system for a fresh installation of Norton AntiVirus or Internet Security.

On cleaning up the WinFax "installation", here is a support document on how the remove it manually.  This should help you clean the last parts off your system should you ever need to run the Norton Removal Tool again.

Re: NIS 2010 Smart Firewall, Intrusion Prevention Cannot Turn on

Ok. The problem reappeared.

I still could not use Norton Removal Tool as there were remnants of WinFax Pro in my registry.

I used this document (http://service1.symantec.com/support/faxprod.nsf/docid/1998102114161204) and manged to clean the registry of WinFax. Then I used NRT and removed all Norton products and then reinstalled NIS 2010. Now everything is working well and much faster.

Resolution Complete.
