I have NIS 2010 17.5.0.127 on XP 32 bit Computer, which Symantec downloaded and installed as an upgrade to NIS 2008 (which was not my favorite version). I have 280 subscription days left. Am in process of purchasing a new 64 bit Win7 Dell computer and want to know what I have to do to be able to have the NIS 2010 version on my new computer along with the 280 days.
Dell is pushing McAfee, but I am requesting they not ship me a computer with McAfee installed.
My thanks.....Miki

Hi Miki,
To install Norton on your new comuter you need your NIS product key and the installation pack. If you do not have your product key written down you might find in a folder called Symantec in your Documents folder.
The installation pack can be downloaded from http://www.norton.com/nis10 (this is for both 32/64 bit). Note that this is the english version.
Since your product key probably is from the 2008 version it handles the number of activations a bit differently than a 2010 key would. This should not be an issue but if there is any problem activating on your new computer (like exceeded number of activations) you will have to call/chat with customer support so they can check/unlock the key for you.
Regards
jAW

Hello Michhala
It depends if you have a subscription for 1 computer or for up to 3 computers. Will you still be using your old computer also? If you will be using both your old computer and your new one and only have a license for 1 computer then you will need to get a 2nd license. If your license is for more than 1 computer then you should have no problem.
If you have a license for 1 computer, then you will have to uninstall it from your old computer and then install it to your new computer.
If you have any problems with activations, you can contact customer support via the free chat service. Please have your key ready. You can contact customer support from here.

This is the link for US/Can. If you need a different location, please consult your local Symantec site for the local free chat customer support link.
Please let us know how you made out. Thanks

Thank you jAW. You were right in that the product key for 2008 and 2010 are the same. Is there any way I can burn to a disc so that I can install to the new computer offline? Perhaps I should check if they would let me buy the CD.....Symantec downloaded 2010 to my desktop when I wasn't looking :) with instructions to click one button for an automatic install, which worked perfectly,.......... this is the first time I do not have a CD. Per your instructions, I now have the installation pack downloaded and will transfer it to my backup external drive to be used on the new computer.

Hello floplot -- Although I use subscription on one computer and plan to use only on one computer when the new one is onboard, I don't know if I actually have the option for subscription to 3 computers or not. I purchased NIS 2008 CD from Symantec as an upgrade from 2005 for $49.95. The NIS 2010 was gifted by Symantec and I have no CD.
Which file would I use to reinstall on a new computer?
I have two replies now to consider:jAW suggested I download the installation pack, which I did, and it is waiting in the wings; you OTOH suggest I uninstall the program from old computer and reinstall in new one.
My thanks.....miki

Hello Michhala
You can check in mynortonaccount.com which will show you how many activations you have and if it's for more than one computer. Since you are actually upgrading from 2008 version, I think it is most likely a 1 computer version. You would want to install the latest version of NIS 2010 on your new computer. You would have to uninstall your version from your old computer first like I said in my previous post.
Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.

Thank you for your post, floplot.
I have been using Symantec security programs since 2002 and have always registered them, but there is nothing in mynortonaccount.com other than profile info.
I am not clear re "You would have to uninstall your version from your old computer first and reinstall on new computer....." Have some questions.
1. Uninstall on old computer first?
2, Reinstall on new computer using the installation pack I downloaded or use a file from the Norton Installer Folder in Programs?
Appreciate your patience.......miki

Hello Michhala
Since I believe you only have a subscription to install NIS 2010 on one computer. It is currently installed on your old computer. When you get your new computer, you want to install NIS 2010 on that computer. If your subscription is for only 1 computer, you will have to uninstall it from the old computer when you are ready to install it to your new computer. I am saying to uninstall it from your old computer so that the subscription becomes available for the new computer. If you don't uninstall it first, then you would be trying to use the same key for 2 computers when the key you have is for 1 computer.
You would install NIS 2010 on your new computer using the link from this thread. After you have installed NIS 2010 on your new computer, then you activate it using your current key. If there is any problem with activating the program with your current key, then you would have to contact customer support via the live chat and tell them that you have a new computer and that you have uninstalled NIS 2010 from your old computer and want to activate the subscription in your new computer. Customer service will be able to reset the activation and help you to activate the subscription for the new computer.
