[GORPY1 Super Spam Squasher]

I Have Only One (1) Computer, NIS 2011 Firewall asks me if I want to Trust or Restrict Local Network. I was not asked this in NIS 2010. I think I have a LAN connection with my ISP (broadband) cable, or is it Ethernet.. Does it matter?, Thanks,,,Gorpy1 P.S Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Hi Gorpy1,

Do you have a router and/or modem or combination router/modem on your network?

One way to gauge if you have an actual router is to check your computers IP address (do ipconfig from CMD prompt) and if it shows something like 192.168.xx or 172.xx then you do have a router.

In your network map does it show more than once device or just your local computer?

As a normal rule you can set the LAN connection to the default of "Shared trust" and it will be fine and particularly in your case since you have only one computer.

With more than one computer or network device there are times when individual components must be set to Ful Trust.

In your case either the default of Shared Trust or Full Trust would both be fine.

Hi Allen......I have only a Modem connected directly to my computer I'm talking about when I boot my computer in the morning and it says I'm protected network and I'm given the choice to Trust or Restrict Only., also my network security map shows only 1 computer.....I'm not talking about that other Trust Control Map .......Thanks.....Gorpy1

If there is no other computer and you are not planning for any networks, I would set it to restricted to be on the safe side.

HI Gorpy1,

Definitely you would want to choose the Trust option. I am not sure why you are being asked that quite honestly. I have never seen that question on my computer.

From the main NIS window click on Network Security Map and then check the trust setting for the Local Area Connection. What is it set to? See image below for illustration.

In the end it is probably not going to make a difference but I don't see any explicit reason to set your own local computer to restricted.

Gorpy1, have you ever selected restricted and if so did it cause you any problems?

This is why I asked that Gorpy1 check the Network Security Map because when you set the trust level there, you get 4 choices, not just two. This is where I recommend setting it to Shared which is the default. I am wondering if perhaps somehow there is no setting there at all though I don't know how this would happen.

As long as I know that setting deals with your computer's interaction with other computers. Setting to restricted will prevent other computers to access your computer should your network be breached. Plus, if you don't want pc's from seeing each other, you can turn on wireless isolation in your router settings.
