david100ny,
From your comments it sounds like either the AutoProtect feature or the drivers for your disk may be the culprit. The Smart Firewall is probably not an issue and you should be able to leave that feature enabled.
We are currently trying to reproduce your problem in-house.

Sorry not to come back in sooner ... as you can see Reece Anschultz is "on your case" and so I hope you can keep in touch and help pin down the problem so that your workaround is not needed in future.
This is one reason why the Forums are so valuable to Norton -- when we break it they have to work out how to mend it!

Hi Reese,
- Do you have any insight to the issue I've been having with the UBS 3.0 functionality on my new Laptop?
- Were you able to reproduce this issue in your Labs, where my Laptop stops recognizing USB 3.0 Devices after installing new software with NIS 2011 fully enabled?
- Will I have better luck with NIS 2012?
Regards,
David
1) Not yet. We are still working on reproducing the problem. I actually don't think that it is specifically a USB 3.0 issue but instead is related to the specific drive that you are using but our attempts to reproduce the problem should help to bare this out.
2) We have the hardware and I believe the actual tests should be occurring this week.
3) NIS 2012 might make a difference but I'm not aware of any changes that are likely to resolve this issue.

Hi Reese,

I own 2 USB 3.0 Devices, so I have these are the experiences I can report.....when I was having USB 3.0 problems....both devices would not be recognized.
However, when I was having USB 3.0 problems.....my USB 2 devices, a USB 2 Flash Drive and a Seagate USB 2 External Driver were successfully recognized and I could copy files.
I now disable AntiVirus Auto Protect and Smart Firewall whenever I need to install new Software and WIndows Updates....after the installation is complete, I then re-enable Antivirus and Firewall.
Since following this procedure (disabling NIS 2011 during Sofware Install), I have not had USB 3.0 problems.

Okay, so it's probably not specific to a type of drive but more than likely to a USB 3 'disk' driver. Regardless, the research should point this out.
This seems VERY unlikely to be related to the firewall, a component that I've worked closely with for a long time. I suspect that you don't need to disable the Smart Firewall in the future. I can, however, understand how AutoProtect might be involved in this.

david100ny ,
We have now tested with USB 3.0 hard disks and have not experienced this problem. Did this Dell come with the USB 3.0 controller or did you add it in? If you added it, can you provide more information about the controller?

Reese,
How did you test?
I see there is another User with USB 3.0 Problems.
The Computer is a Dell Laptop and it came with the USB 3.0 installed; it has 2 USB 3.0 Ports built in.
From "Computer Manager" --> Devices ......it looks to me that the Laptop has the Renesas USB 3.0 Chipset.
I have updated recently to NIS 2012.
I continue to Disable Smart Firewall and Anti-virus Auto-Detect before installing Windows Updates and Software applications.
Please let me know how you've tested and how you are so certain that Norton is not causing the problem with USB 3.0 Performance.

- I've been very detailed in my experiences and steps I've taken in the Three (3) Pages in this Discussion.
I don't think that I ever said that your Norton product wasn't causing the problem. In fact, based upon your posts, I'm pretty certain that it is causing this problem to occur. Whether your Norton product is THE problem or not has yet to be determined. I currently believe it to be an interaction of the USB 3 filesystem drivers and your Norton product. The USB 3 implementation in Windows is a completely new rewrite from the USB 2 version and that is probably the root source of this problem. We're going to continue attempting to reproduce your problem given the new information that you have provided.

I have exactly the same problem as david100ny.
I just upgraded from NIS 2011 to 2012 and all my USB devices won't work anymore.
I'm also on a Dell Laptop (XPS L501X), have two USB slots (both 3.0) and a Renesas USB 3.0 host controller.
I'm also running Windows 7 64 bit.
My device manager tells me that the host controller can not be started (code 10).
Has there been any update on that topic by now?
