NIS 2011 and Windows Live Messenger

Hi!

I've a new Compaq laptop, and impossible when using WLM to have any sound working... video is fine. I uninstalled Live Essentials, I uninstalled NIS, reinstall everything and still the same pb. I check all the sound, the mike, the speakers, the mixer: everything is on, NO mute, and it's working with WMP and other applications...  I am told by several sources that the pb is NIS 2011.

Could you help me ?

Thank you,

Re: NIS 2011 and Windows Live Messenger

Hi,

can you please tell us the exact version of your Norton product?
1. Open the main window
2. Click on Help & Support -> About menu
3. On the About window find the version number (it will look like this: 18.6.0.29)

Also please include which version of WLM is installed on your machine, and which Windows OS and Service Pack do you use.

Thanks!

Hello ALAINDALLAS

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Did your new laptop come with any pre installed security program? If it did, was the previous security program uninstalled thoroughly first before you installed NIS 2011?  Did you check the options in WLM under Tools, Options and Sound and made sure that the box with sound mute isn't checked? Have you tested the sound effects for any of the options that can have sound?

Re: NIS 2011 and Windows Live Messenger

Hi, Papauz,

Since I'm helping a friend to try to solve this pb I'ven't the PC with me, but I can tell you that as soon as I installed NIS 2011 from the CD, it went on the Symantec site to update to the latest available version of NIS 2011.

It's WLM 2011 running with Win 7 Family Premium with the latest pack installed (04-20-2011).

Thanks for your help

Re: NIS 2011 and Windows Live Messenger

Hi, FLOPLOT,

There was no pre-install security program. Like I said it first,  the mute feature and all the mixer commands were the first things checked... everything is on and correct.

I followed a MS procedure to uninstall WLM et réinstalled it, I did disable NIS, all of this to no avail: vidéo is OK, but still NO sound.

Re: NIS 2011 and Windows Live Messenger

Hello ALAINDALLAS

Did Windows Live Messenger have sound working before you installed NIS 2011? Have you checked with the Compaq site? It is also possible that it might be a flaw on Microsoft's end with Windows Live Messenger. Have you checked with the Help Center for Windows Live Messenger to see if there are others who are having this same problem? Thanks.

If nothing else works try this. Uninstall the sound driver and software <reboot>, reinstall driver and software <reboot>. I have seen WLM and other apps corrupt the sound driver.

Re: NIS 2011 and Windows Live Messenger

There have been a lot of sound problems with Compaq/HP laptops. Also check the Compaq site on your laptop, if the problem is known there.

One of the main solutions for this problem is indeed what previous poster suggests.

As a complete uinstall/reinstall of your sound driver and programs most of the times does not work, this suggestion from the HP forums most of the times works :

- Just go to Device Manager, open Sound Devices tree, right click on your Sound Device and 'Uninstall'. Do not unistall anything else there!

- Restart your laptop and upon restart Windows will install your Sound Device again.

Hope this helps.
