Hi RichardMW,
I know you mentioned running the Norton Removal tool already. How did you run this? We normally recommend doing a conventional uninstall of your Norton software, reboot then run the removal tool twice with a reboot in between each run. This helps to ensure that everything is removed correctly.
Also, please try the suggestions in the following post and see if it helps. This was for a different problem but I still recommend trying this to see if it has any effect.
Please let us know how it goes.
Best wishes.
Allen

AllenM,
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried them all.
I did do an uninstall and chose the remove all settings option and rebooted. I then ran the removal tool 3 times. I rebooted after each step.
When I did a re-install, NIS did not have to ask me for my activation code. That means that the removal tool did not remove everything.
I followed your link and read the suggestions.
I ran the Office diagnostic tool. No problems.
I ran the NIS diagnostic tool. No problems.
I followed the suggestions for "NIS is running slowly". No results.
Do you have any other ideas?
Do you personally run NIS 2011 with Outlook 2007? Do you see any performance issues?
I am reaching the stage where I may just uninstall NIS 2011 and try to re-install NIS 2010. That version worked well.
Will I have any problems re-installing 2010?

Hello Richard
The Norton Removal Tool leaves behind the file with your key in it on purpose so that you can reinstall the product again. and don't have to enter the key again.
Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

floplot,
Thanks. That explains the Norton Removal Tool mystery.
Of course, I still have the performance problem with Outlook 2007 on Win7 64 bit and NIS 2011..

Hi Richard,
Yes I run NIS 2011 with Outlook 2007, actually the full Office 2007 Standard suite and have never experienced problems like this. When I first upgraded to NIS 2011 (from 2010) my Antispam stopped working (found out a few days later) and just had to uninstall and reinstall it (not even use the removal tool) and fixed that problem.
I've never experienced anything like what you are describing.
What happens if you change the following options?
Computer Settings > MIcrosoft Office automatic scan to OFF (I know you did this part before also)
Network Settings > set both Email Antivirus scan and Antispam to OFF.
Do you still experience the slowness when you double click an email?
Best wishes.

AllenM,
You asked:"

Network Settings > set both Email Antivirus scan and Antispam to OFF
"
I have Microsoft Office automatic scan OFF. No change.
If I turn off Network Settings --> Antispam, then the problem goes away and email opens quickly.
Leaving Antispam on and turning email Antivirus scan off, has not effect.

AllenM,
I notice that you are running Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit.
I am running Win 7 Premium x64.
I suspect that the 64 bit Win 7 is the key difference between our experiences.
I wish someone from Symantec would read this thread and comment on the issue of 64 bit Win 7 and Outlook 2007.
I have read some threads saying that NIS 2011 runs on 64 bit Win7 but does not integrate with 64bit IE8. I would like to know if they have tested Outlook 2007 (32 bit) on Win7 64 bit.

Hi Richard,
NIS does not support 64 bit browsers or 64 bit Outlook but does fully support running on a 64 bit OS. Being involved during the Beta I do know that your combination was tested and I don't recall seeing this problem reported during the Beta.
I will ask for Symantec to get involved.
Thanks very much.
Best wishes

Hi Richard,
You mentioned having a POP account before. Are there other accounts configured in Outlook? Do you have any IMAP accounts, exchange accounts, etc? Any additional POP accounts?
Also, does the problem only happen when you double click an email? What if you just single click on it, does the email contents open in the Reading pane right away or is it also delayed? Just to confirm, is the delay occurring on the POP account you mentioned earlier?
Also when you reinstalled NIS following use of the removal tool did you run Live Update to ensure you had the latest updates to NIS? Did you reboot your computer after running Live Update?
Thanks very much and again I have requested Symantec to respond with advice on this.
Best wishes.
Allen

AllenM,
Only Pop3 accounts. I have 6 Pop3 accounts. Download of these work fine.
Reading email after download is where the performance problem happens.
The problem happens only when double clicking to launch email, I don't single click. I don't use the reading pane.
After re-install, I ran NIS updates.
