Hi,

I checked the NIS 2012 Network Map and found information pertaining to "Adapter Manufacturer."  The manufacturer is "Wistron Corporation."  I looked up the manufacturer on the website and it's for Wireless LAN.  I'm not useing a router and have never heard of this adapter.

I checked Device Manager under Network Adapters and found listed Atheros and Realtek only which, by the way, have not been able to update using Device Manager, Update Driver.

Does anyone have any suggestions on to check this out?

Cody,

If your system is finding a wireless LAN then you have something turned on that you may want to turn off. I am assuming that you are not using a router and that you do not have any wireless devices active.

The adapters might update better if you go to their sites and download the latest drivers from the developer.

Adapter Manufacturer

Shows the name of the network adapter manufacturer of the device The adapter manufacturer's name is based on the physical address (also known as Media Control Access address or MAC address) of the device.

Perhaps Norton is guessing the wrong adapter manufactuer by confusing the MAC address of the device.

Do you know where I can start looking to turn it off?  Sorry, but I'm not that knowledgable!

And to confirm, I am not using a wireless router.  I checked Network and Sharing Center/Manage Wireless Networks and clicked into Adapter Properties and it's showing Atheros on my PC.  This Wistron Corp. Adapter is coming from somewhere and I don't know where to check to turn anything off.

Sorry I'm confused.  Are you saying that there is a NEW device on the network map or Norton is showing the wrong adapter manufactuer for your PC?

You're reaching the edge of my knowledge base. Is that adapter listed in device manager? If so disable it there. If not then if you have any other computers on your network I'd look carefully at each one.

It's only showing on the NIS Network.  It's a device that is not on my computer.

Hello Dickevans,

I checked 1) Device Manager/Network Adapters,2) Network and Sharing Center/Manage Wireless Networks, Adapter Properties (which only shows Atheros), and 3) there are no other computers - just mine.

Now, NIS 2012 is no longer functioning (Icon gone and the other NIS Icon will not work), and I.N. Explorer 9 is no longer functioning in regular mode.  I am sending this email from Safe Mode w/Networkiing. Creepy, huh?

Looks like you broke the PC.  Try to undo everything you did.  Do a system restore if you have to...

After you got your PC working, open the Norton UI and click settings > Network > Network Security Settings and click "purge" next to Network security map.  That will clear the map of all devices.  It could be older device that was once on your network but is no longer there (office network perhaps?  or a iPod or other wireless device (like Mobile phones))
