After an hour and a half messing around I have it working again. Just checked and I am on NIS 2011. I am not upgrading to 2012 for a while to see what happens. If this re-occurs again, I will have no choice but to abandon NIS and find a competitor. I could live with the problem if Norton would man up and admit they have an issue that needs correction, but I do not respect suppliers that will not be forthright on their issues.

Hi tostger,
What did you do to get everything working again?

Sorry for the delay in responding. I had to start the main homegroup computer first and then start the other one which of course is only a temporary fix. After that it stopped working again. I took a chance and upgraged to 2012, set up my homegroup as per all the previous posts and everything has been good for weeks now so I assume Norton has issued a fix in 2012

I'm hAving the same EXACT problems and here it is Dec 30th 2011 so I doubt that there's been any 'fix' issued by Symantec!

Good thing I saw this...I was ready to scrub my old PC which created the homegroup way back when...who'd of thought it would be Norton to shut down the home network with a new release which is on the new PC but the old one has thel last release... and is not attached to the LAN any more!!!!...

So I upgraded to a new desktop (windows 7 pro 64bit) and just installed NIS 2012. I wanted to start a homegroup with my laptop (windows 7 pro 32bit).
Initially I couldn't even get the desktop to recognize the laptop in the network. I wasn't even able to see the "join now" button on my laptop. But after playing around with some things, I managed to get it working. Here is what I did:
- Retyped the WORKGROUP names to be exactly the same on both computers. I did this eventhough it was already the same.
- Made sure "Network Discovery" was enabled on both
- Made sure that the two computers had DIFFERENT COMPUTER NAMES. I usually put my name everytime I get a new system so its always "NAME"-PC. Once I changed one to a different name, it worked. THIS WAS MY PROBLEM!
- In NIS 2012 -> Advanced -> Network Security Map I have the trust level of my Laptop to SHARED. I believe this was the default.
So I don't think NIS 2012 was the problem (well in my case). Once I changed the name on one of the computers, I immediately saw my laptop in "NETWORK" folder.
Hope this helps.

I had the exact same problem and I fixed it by doing the following:
Open Norton->Advanced->network security map.
change all the network items from shared to full trust. They ALL have to be full trust. This should not be a problem since they are all on your network anyway.
wait a few minutes and all computers in the homegroup should see each other. If you dont want to wait, open the homegroup troubleshototer by right clicking on homegroup. It will refresh the homegroup after the network test and everything will be there.
Now, if something attaches to your network at a later date at a shared trust level, your homegroups will be funky again.
I have only had this problem after upgrading from 2011 to 2012. I have had this problem on all upgrades I have done.

If anybody from Symantec wants me posts logs or run tests for them on this, just ask.
