After installing NIS 2012 on my Windows 7 64 bit ASUS PC, I started receiving error messages whenever I right clicked on the desktop or in Windows Explorer, instead of getting a context menu (copy...paste...etc.).

I downloaded a utility called ShellExView v1.67 - Shell Extensions Manager  from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html which identifed all of the programs that created entries in the context menus. Since I had just instaled NIS, I disabled an extension that was identified as being installed by Symantec.

The problem immediately went away.

It appears that this is a bug that Symantec had to address and fix in NIS 2012.

I tried to attached a copy of the entry from this program, but jpg files cannot be attached.

I loved through a similar problem some years ago when N 360 went from V2 to V3 and, believe it or not, although exactly the same symptoms occurred and were cured by removing Norton the actual cause was not in Norton but in another program that had not followed a change made by Microsoft in one element of Windows!

Third Party updated their program and all three live happily together ..... (until Microsoft does it again which I have a suspicion they may have ... )

In that case the third party application was called PowerDesk by Avanquest and is a File Manager like Windows Explorer.

Do you have that program by any chance?

If it's not too long could you copy / paste the list from that utility so Norton can check for a similar situation.

I will check it out, but the list is extensive. I have not installed anything since NIS 2012, so this is unlikely.

One thing I can add to this is that I noticed that the Norton NIS was installed in the Probram x86 folder which indicates that it is a 32 bit, not a 64 bit application. Maybe this is causing the problem?

Strangely enough, when I got the computer a couple of weeks ago, the first thing I did was to install NIS 2011. I did not have the problem after that install.

I have 2012 installed on another PC, a Win 7 32 bit one - I will check tonight and see if the situation exists on this one as well.

I can't help on the locations but so many people are running Windows 7 64 and NIS 2012 that I'd expect more reports if it was inherent in 2012 ...

Unfortunately my test bed that has WIN 7 64 (and VISTA ) on it has crashed and I don't have time to fix it at the moment.

Just to let you know I also have a similar issue, but in my case I'm talking about the right click menu of recent files that appears from icons loaded to the taskbar. Don't seem to have an issue with the desktop icons.  [Edited to add reference to the taskbar & desktop.]

Win7 64bit. NIS2011 just installed, no other changes since. Worked fine before then.

As an avid multitasker with loads of spreadsheets on the go it's a right pain.

After a bit of experimenting, have found that it is not that the context menu does not appear, but that it is delayed. Can be upto 30 seconds delay, which will seem to us all that it is not working. It seems to come and go. Sometimes the context pop-ups are there, next right-click they are not. Some programs seem to work all the time e.g. xnview, but MS office 2007 programs often do not work - except for Outlook which always works.. Not working properly is not restricted to MS office icons though. eg Same problem with Windows Explorer.

Clear as mud eh!

Thanks for the list  -- I can't begin to understand it but if we get someone in here who knows about these things it could help.

You mentioned ShellExView earlier and I've just downloaded the 32 and 64 bit versions. I've run the 32 bit on my main system and I'm a bit puzzled since when I sort by context menu no Norton (or Symantec) items are listed ..... although my old friend PowerDesk is there with a pink flag saying there is something unusual or suspicious about the extension ....

Did you see any of this when you ran ShellExVIew?

I'm flipping over into WIN 7 64 shortly, if it's still operational, and install ShellExView there.

Hi Hugh,

An explanation to those who are perplexed by my ramblings:

At the bottom of the screen is the Taskbar,  and program icons can be pinned to the Taskbar to allow quick access. In addition, if you right click on the icon that is on the Taskbar, it gives you quick access to recent files, and your favourites that you permanently pinned there. It saves me hours every day - well, ten minutes anyway.  :-)

Attachment shows the menu that opened when I right clicked on the Windows Explorer icon on the Taskbar. [Edit: Opps, see we can't upload jpgs, so you'll have to imagine it!.]
