Just restart the PC. That "fixed" the issue and the items will no longer be grayed out.

OK, but this is not normal behavior for this type of program. I work on a PC that is 24 hours turned on and connected to the Internet.
How do I know if it suddenly crashed? These are pictures taken after 20 hours of normal activity.
Maybe restarting the right way but this is unacceptable. Or, if I was notified by some visual alert or icon in sys. tray turns red .....

Hi LazarusLong
Would you be prepared to submit some log files from your machine to Norton so that they can further analyse this issue? If so, then please follow the instructions below:
Collecting Logs
Be sure to compress (Right click on the folder, click Send To, then Compressed Folder) this directory depending on which Operating System you are using.
Windows Vista or Windows 7 - C:\Program Data\NortonInstaller
Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NortonInstaller
(Instructions above courtesy of Tim Lopez, Norton Forums Administrator)
If you are happy to do this, then please advise so in your reply. Norton will be in contact with you via PM with details on how to upload your log files.
Incidentally, were all of your images above taken from an Administrator-level account? The right-click menu in image 'Untitled 3.png' looks like it's been captured from a Standard User account. Please confirm this as the user-account type mix on your machine is important.
Thanks

It looks like Norton Failed to grab an exclusive lock on one of the database files. There is already a defect that has been written up about this problem. Right now it is only effecting a small number of users right now, and we are looking into it. If you have this problem again please let us know.

Hi michaell:
Leofwine has reported a similar problem here with the Smart Firewall status button occasionally greying out in NIS 2012 v, 19.2.0.10 even though the switch is in the ON position. Is it safe to assume that Leofwine's firewall is working and NIS is still secure even though the button is greyed out on the main GUI?
Also, does the Auto-Fix feature in NIS 2012 run automatically after each re-boot if the problem is detected after NIS is loaded? Instead of re-booting, will a manual Auto-Fix (Support | Get Support) also fix the problem? Do you know if a clean re-install of NIS 2012 using the Norton Removal Tool will permanently fix this problem?
I couldn't find any mention of this defect in the Known Issues with NIS 19.1 post here or the Issues Fixed in Version 19.2 post here. Has anyone from Symantec updated you on the status of the bug fix?
