Hi,
Welcome to Norton Community
We would like to gather more information to provide a better solution
Whether NIS 2012 started in disabled mode?
Are you receiving any error messages?
Are you able to run Liveupdate?
Whether NIS status shows green or red?
Thanks,
Mathew

Can you run a full system scan in Safe Mode and let us know if it finds anything?
Also, a second opinion is always good. Download and run a full system scan with the FREE version of Malwarebytes. Do this scan in Safe Mode also. You can find it here.

Hi PeterWesson88,
If you come up with nothing detcted using MBAM Free as Peterweb suggests. I would then suggest that you run the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool per the following instructions:
If that does not work I suggest you try the GO THERE NOW at the bottom of the above page.
Please let us know how you get on.

Firsty to catch up (this happened a good few days perhaps a week or more ago)
I ran remove and reinstall. It took quite a while but after it did that I ran a scan and panicked when it said At Risk.
One of your kind support guys patiently explained that was because it was treating itslef like a new install and once it had scanned it should go to green which it did.
I am still concerned though as sometimes when I log on it doesn't seem to work properly and the reason to reply now is that when I looked in a relatively old HP Advisor it said that the firewall was off and anti Virus and internet security at risk.
I clicked on NIS from the bottom right icon by the clock and it siad it hadn't updated for four hours. Soon after I brought it up that way HP Advisor switched to all OK
I would attach a picture but looks like they can't be attached.

Peter,
here's some help on attachments.
When you say 'it isn't working properly' can you be much more specific? Also, if there are any error messages can you provide them exactly?
Windows firewall should be turned off if your are runniing NIS. The Norton smart firewall replaces it.
If your system has been running continuously during that time the last update should have been less that an hour earlier.
If you are still not comfortable with the current install of your Norton product please use the Norton Remoave and Reinstall Tool
http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_ty
to put a fresh, clean copy on your system.
BEFORE you do that please save your identity safe data!
Keep us posted on your progress. We'll be here

Thanks Dick.
The first problem I noticed was that sometimes the NIS icon wasn't appearing in the bottom left hand corner. If I then clicked on that icon then the word Secure in the sidebar disappeared.
That prompted this train of posts. Quite often when I switch to the performance screen there is a dead period showing where nothing at all seems to be running.
The last manifestation is that HP Update which normally picks up NIS and says all is OK
but was instead saying At Risk.
All of this seems to me to suggest that my PC isn't quite as stable as it should be at best and I'm a suspicious soul, probably overly so, when it comes to that sort of thing affecting security software.

If your HP advisor is old, it may be worth updating it. Newer versions of software products will often work better with updated Windows files.
Have you checked your computers time and date? This can affect the status reporting of your products.
