Why does the Norton automatic subscription renewal for NIS 2012 cost £44.99 when I can buy it for £24.99 via the Norton site, £22 via Amazon, etc? Why should I auto renew at twice the price?

A very good question to which there is no known answer except to say that "Special Offers" are widespread these days.
I suggest you contact the Norton OnLine Customer Support via the CHAT link as below and ask them to honor the lower Norton price. Renewing has the advantage that you can do it at any time and not lose unexpired days; if you buy a new copy -- on Norton or elsewhere -- so that you get a new KEY and enter that in your product GUI then it wipes out the unexpired days although Norton CHAT are great at restoring the lost days but we recommend the simpler solution of not using a new KEY until a couple of days before your subscription expires -- that minizes the loss and gives you a safety net in case you have to do something to get it right.

Thank you for your suggestion.
I understand that there may be offers via other retailers and that prices will vary, but to be offered renewal of an existing subscription at £44.99 only to find that Norton themselves are offering the same product at £24.99 is somewhat frustrating and annoying. In fact, while moving round various Norton pages, I found the same product offered at £49.99, £44.99, £39.99 and £24.99 depending on where I looked! The same thing happened last time with automatic renewal which just renewed without telling me how much it would be. I found out later that I could have got it much cheaper elsewhere. I switched off auto renewal after that.
I managed to contact customer support, eventually, after much frustration with ‘Form Validation Errors’, and with their help purchased the product at £24.99 without having to set up new details, etc. Also had my subscription extended by 30 days, which appears a standard thing to do with disgruntled customers, but is appreciated none the less.
Thank you again for your reply and suggestion.

I agree it is infuriating but at least they are good at helping when you contact them -- but it would be nice if one did not have to.
Don't hesitate to contact Norton when you come across discrepencies on their websites -- You are on the UK one I take it from the £ prices -- since here on the US site where I'm located now they have corrected some of them when we point them out.
I think most people do turn off automatic renewal when they realize it defaults to on preferring the risk of forgetting to renew (and now the products stop dead in their tracks and don't continue to give protection at the level of the date of expiry) with the benefit of catching a good price either online at Norton or in the stores.
