NIS 2012 won't start

After recovering from a crash, my NIS 2012 won't start either from the Start Menu or from my desktop icon (the NIS icon no longer appears on the taskbar). Apparently, NIS is still protecting against viruses, but I can't bring up the program on the screen. In addition, the Norton Toolbar no longer appears in Firefox 11.0.

I tried running Add/Remove programs, hoping to find a repair function. When I ran it, I got the following error message:

"Uninstaller Error

An error occurred while trying to remove Norton Internet Security. It may already have been unstalled. Would you like to remove Norton Internet Security from the Add or Remove programs list?"

The machine is running XP SP3. The four other computers in my network are running NIS without problems.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Burt

Re: NIS 2012 won't start

Burt,

Hard to say without details of the crash and how you recovered from it but it sounds like something messed up your Norton installation.

I'd say the best thing would be to run the Norton Removal Tool that you can download as below. Run it a couple of times with a reboot inbetween.

As Delphinium suggests, a complete clean up and reinstall may be the best thing but I'd like to add a note about a new tool that Norton have just brought in that combines the removal and the reinstall into one operation:

This link Symantec Norton Removal Tool. will direct you to the Symantec Norton Removal Tool .

Then reinstall your NIS2012 -- the easiest way probably is to log onto your MyNortonAccount from when you activated it and use the Download button. If you get a refusal saying you have activated the maximum number of times then contact Customer Support OnLine using the CHAT mathod as below since they have the tools to liberate the activation.

To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there. You may have to scroll down a little to see the CHAT button.

Please let us know how you get on or if you have any queries ....

Hugh,

Your suggestions sound like they are right on target. Thank you.

I will try them after work tomorrow.  I'll report back here with results.

Thanks again,

Burt

Thank you for the lead. All is well.

The link you supplied lead to a live page, but the link to download the Removal Tool had been removed. So I googled "Norton Internet Security 2012 support."  This led me to a support page that contains a link to the new tool you mentioned, now called "Norton Removal and Reinstallation" or "NRnR."

This program worked flawlessly. It removed the remnants of the old NIS and installed the latest version with no need to contact support to raise the limit on my installs. (I had, in fact, used them all up.).

I'm very grateful for your help. It pointed me in the right direction to solve my problem.

A word of advice to anyone who treads this path: be patient. The whole process, start to finish took about 20 minutes. Give the program the breathing room it needs and don't panic.

Thanks again,

Burt

Re: NIS 2012 won't start

I'm sorry that link led to a broken page .... It did for me the first time I Previewed it before posting so I thought I had changed it to a URL that led direct to Downloading the NRT rather than to a page where you have to select what you want to reinstall!

I had thought of referring you to the NRnR Tool -- that's a new addition, not replacement -- but decided to give you the older tool since Norton advise using it if NRnRT does not do the job fully and you had been having some problems .....

I'm glad that all's well that ends well ....

I can't correct my message now so here's the link I meant to be used:

Norton Removal Tool

That should go direct to that download. I just tried it and it does immediately throw up the WIndows "Do you really want to do this" screen.
