In NIS 2013 "all patches and product upgrades will be downloaded automatically and will not require a restart" as per Tim Lopez product advice.
Previous experience seems to suggest that new product upgrades can take some considerable time to "bed in" with a number of glitches to sort out once the upgrade is published to the wide world - a common experience not unique to Norton by any means! As far as I can make out, this scenario is now almost inevitably playing out with the first release of NIS 2013.
My question (as a NIS 2012 user) is whether this means we will no longer be able to choose for ourselves when to move to the next product upgrade? (I am of course not talking about the usual Live Updates previously downloaded in NIS 2012 and earlier).

Hi swordbyte,
You can avoid an install of the upgrade (new vesion) by turning OFF the following setting.

Thanks for this!

Note that the Norton gui actually says "Auto Download of _New Version_".
It does not use the words "update" or "upgrade".
The term "new version" is ambiguous.
It doesn't specify if that's an _update_ or an _upgrade_.
I _do_ want to automatically update.
e.g., from 19.x.x.1 to 19.x.x.2
By some peoples' definition, 19.x.x.2 is a "new version".
I do _not_ want to automatically upgrade.
e.g., 19.x.x.2 to 20.x.x.x
By some peoples' definition, 20.x.x.x is a "new version".
So what does Symantec mean exactly when they say "Auto Download of New Version"?
Update or upgrade? Or both?

Jo joen,
Update is a minor change - v1.1 to v1.2
Upgrade is a version number change v 19 to v 20.
Easiest way for an man like me to remember it is if the first number changes (19 to 20) it is a Versioln change (Upgrade).
If only the secondary numbers change (1.1 to 1.2) it is an Update.
Hope that clears it up and regardless of what is correct terminology and what is not - this is what Norton's terminology is! ![]()
<edit> I guess I could have just said, turn that setting to OFF if you do not desire to upgrade from v 19 to v20.

"Auto Download of New Version" refers to obtaining an entirely new product, (i.e. version 18, version 19, version 20). Software updates within each version, (i.e. 19.8.0.14, 19,9.0.9), are downloaded and installed automatically via LiveUpdate and are not governed by this setting..

loen,
<< So what does Symantec mean exactly when they say "Auto Download of New Version"? >>
Note also that it says Auto Download and not Auto Install ...
I have checked this with Norton and was told that even with the versionless updates it will not do more than download the needed files during idle time and then ask you if you want to Upgrade or not .... it's then up to you to say Yes or No.
So, as always, read the fine print on any notice you get and make sure you are fully aware of what you are being asked!
Hands up anyone who has not found themselves with an unwanted item after installing an Adobe product!

Yes. I get really annoyed when downloading stuff and find something else installed as well. I wish they would leave the option unchecked and then ask for a positive opt in.
Adobe are not the only culprits.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Still a bit confused by the concept of versionless updates (and can't remember where I first saw this).
What does it mean, and how will we "auto download a new version" if there are no versions?
Also how will we tell the difference in future between what would have previously been 19.x to 19.y (update) as against 19.x to 20.x (upgraded version) - assuming of course that we care!

Two very good questions to which I don't know the answer except possibly that in the last kiind you will get a popup asking do you wish to upgrade ?
