OK, here's yet another Symantec bug:
Yesterday, NIS 2012 suddenly popped up with an error message which I cannot remember and I didn't have time to mess with it. Now NIS 2012 can't update it's Norton 2012 Smart Virus Definitions X64. Without taking all day, how do I fix this? Am I going to have to reinstall? Am I going to have to uninstall and use your utility to clear out all your files and registry entries yet again??? I'm wishing now I had not upgraded from 2011 to 2012.
What's the matter with you people? You've been doing this for 20-30 years. Can't you get this right? You want to know why I don't install your other stuff? You want to know why I'll only install the bare essentials from you? It's because of your bugs! And you can't even get NIS 2012 right! How do I fix this problem below?

OK, I fixed this problem. I turned off the "Smart Definitions" and downloaded the full 148 MB virus definition library instead. My subcription ends in 65 days so I guess it'll be full downloads for the duration. I don't want to uninstall/clean/reinstall. I don't have the time for that and I'm getting really tired of dealing with bugs. Speaking of, there are 2 more bugs in NIS 2012 of which I will make 2 more posts...

Have you rebooted recently or do you leave your machine on 24/7? Updates sometimes need a reboot to take full effect.
You can try AutoFix to see if it can bring your installation back to normal. Support-Get Support.

Yes, I did do a reboot after the failed Smart X64 update. I then tried to do Smart X64 updates about 5 times.
After I did a successful full virus definition update by turning off Smart X64 updates, I turned the Smart X64 update back on and it worked! Apparently, NIS 2012 needed a full update to clear out its previous database. Perhaps it somehow became corrupted.
BTW, after NIS 2012 gave me that error message in the beginning yesterday, it did try to do an autofix but it failed.
Hopefully I won't get anymore error messages. I have other things to do and I don't have time to deal with this.
