NIS Language

Last year I downloaded NIS2010 English version and activated it with the product key of a boxed NIS2010 Polish version. The result was satisfactory - the English version was installed but now I have to renew it and here are my questions:

1. Can I download and install NIS2011trial English version on top of NIS2010? If so, will the English (not Polish) version of NIS2011be installed? If yes, then the trial version can be activated with any (language) product key.

2. When I click on Express Renewal of NIS2010 I get two options:

> Express Renewal

> Enter your product key (If you have a subscription renewal code or product key you can enter it here)

Will I get the English version if I enter the product key of a boxed NIS2011 English version?

As some of you might know the problem is caused by the fact that the product key is for the Polish version and if any automatic upgrade is executed I will end up with the Polish version of NIS2011.

It is my understanding that if the answer to the above questions is NO then uninstalling NIS2010 is the only way out.

As said, the key is not the KEY but the download and so if you go to the Update Center it will download the version of the KEY and not the installed version. So I'd play safe and download the whole file from the USA/CAN website for two reasons:

I prefer to install from a fully download file than via a Download Manager although there can be advantages for that.

You should be certain that you are getting the English version.

Here's the site that should do that

New NIS 2011:

Click on this link -- NIS 2011

You should see when you see the file download name that it contains the clue letters EN

This will download a single file of around 90MB which you should save on your hard drive where you can use it again if necessary -- Do not select Run but use Save when asked and remember where you put it!

If you are installing on VISTA or WIndows 7 I recommend selecting the file with a right mouse click and then choosing Run as Administrator since I find it gives better results.

For safety you should make sure you have a copy of the currently valid activation KEY -- although NIS 2011 should pick it up -- and Export the data in your Identity Safe if you use that.

You should be OK installing on top of the NIS 2010 since the first thing it does is to uninstall any previous version. If there is a problem you can always clean it up and start again -- another advantage of Saving the file.

Make sure you run LiveUpdate a few times with a reboot between until you get a message that you are fully uptodate.

Hope that is clear but if not sing out ....

Hugh, as English is not my mother tongue, I have to make sure that I understand your first sentence correctly. Let's say I enter (see my second question) the product key of a boxed NIS 2011 English version. Now the KEY question is what does the Update Center do first?

1. Does it look first at the NIS 2010 product? If so, it determines that it is the Polish version and upgrades to NIS 2011 Polish version. Then updates my product information on the Norton Account: Product Key xxx…, Product Language ENGLISH. Bad news but there is a ray of hope - NIS 2012 should be OK ! LOL.

2. Does it look first at the entered key? If so, it upgrades to the NIS 2011 English version. Bingo!

I know that this might be a tough question but it would be nice to know the answer.

I agree that bypassing the Update Center is "safer" but I am not used to bypassing a problem unless I have no other choice.

Thanks for your advice. It seems to be clear. One question: which version will be downloaded from NIS 2011 - a standard or a trial one? If this is the standard version I will need to have the new product key handy.

The link that Hugh gave for NIS 2011 will be the regular up to date as far as version number goes. It is not the trial version. It will be the English version. Please use that link and do not go to the Update Center since you used a Polish version key. Do not use the express renewal.

When you download the English version from Hugh's link, click on the renew button and put in the key from your boxed English version.. When you enter the key in this manner, the product is already in English and the English key will not change the language of the program.

Since the last key that you used to activate your product came from a Polish version, the update center would give you the Polish version.

To avoid that problem, please use Hugh's link and the key from your boxed English version. Please stay away from the Upgrade Center in this case. Here is the link once more to use.

Please run live update until no more updates and then reboot.

You can use that link and the program is made to be installed on top of your NIS 2010 since that is in English also. You do not have to uninstalll NIS 2010. Thanks.

Sure I will come back but it won't be soon. I still have 60 days to go with NIS 2010. I believe the remaining days will be lost - not added to the new subscription. Also I need to get a boxed NIS 2011 English version.

I had made a mistake in what I had first written and posted, one of my colleagues mailed me about it and I dashed back in to correct what I'd said while I still could -- there's a one hour cut-off -- and before you read what I'd first posted.

So the best thing is to ignore that first sentence and just follow floplot's correct and clear instructions.

I'm sorry that I cannot tell you what the Update Center looks at or when since I did not program it but what I and floplot have told you is correct and comes direct from Norton's programmers -- the Norton Staff here have their names in red -- and is the way to bypass the problem when a different region KEY is used.

So if you want to upgrade an existing "mixed langauge" installation of NIS from 2010 to 2011 and want it to stay with the state of the version you downloaded you must not use the Update Center since it will use the language of the KEY which you said was Polish

Just add one thing -- for safety, if you use the Identity Safe you may wish to Export the data in it to a safe place not on your main drive so that you can reimport it if anything goes wrong.

I'm Polish and I also have EN version of NIS2011. I got my key from Polish reseller back when I had NIS2010 installed. It didn't matter at all, my EN version got activated. Then I upgraded to v1011 but I made a mistake and did it automatically through the program, and to my surprise the version changed from EN to PL. I had to reinstall whole product, this time with downloadable EN version and activate with an old key so the subscription days remained.

So don't use automatic upgrade, just download new EN version from Symantec server and use the old key when asked to activate. When the subscription is over, use the key.
