Sure I will come back but it won't be soon. I still have 60 days to go with NIS 2010.  I believe the remaining days will be lost - not added to the new subscription. Also I need to get a boxed NIS 2011 English version.

Czarek

Just seen this came in while writing my other answer.

Earlier you referred to a Polish KEY now you say << Also I need to get a boxed NIS 2011 English version.  >>

It doesn't matter whether you get a boxed English set or download the English file as we told you -- as you found out the English NIS 2010 stayed in English when you used a Polish KEY so if you update the English NIS 2010 to 2012 using the English downloaded file we gave you the link to, you can use an English, Polish or .... Key when it is due to be renewed in 60 days and it will stay in English!

The duration of the subscription is tied to the KEY not to the version you intall so if you follow our instructions and download NIS 2012 and install it on top of NIS 2010 -- English on English -- it should pick up the subscription from your MyNortonAccount or from where it was recorded on your drive and not affect the duration since it's the old KEY and not a new one. As you said at the beginning << activated it with the product key of a boxed NIS2010 Polish version >>

We know this is so since we have all done it and conversely you can buy a boxed copy of say NIS 2009 with a key that has not been used and it will activate the 2010 or 2011 versions -- the KEY is not tied to the date of the version 2010 2011 .....

And even if by any computer glitch something goes wrong and it does change the number of days (or uses up an activation if you have a 3 PC version with only 1 or 2 used) all you have to do is to contact the Norton OnLine CHAT support and they will resolve it -- they are used to it and have the tools to correct the central database.

Equally if you should get a message when activating that you have used up all your available activations they will sort this out too -- but it should not happen when there is no change of computer hardware.

So if you have a running as you like it NIS 2010 installation with 60 days left there is no need to wait to get the changes in 2011. Follow the instructions and install on top of NIS 2010 and when it asks you if you want to keep your settings say YES.

And if you see a cheap sale of a boxed NIS in the next 60 days you can buy it and keep it until a couple of days before expiry and use the new KEY then to replace the expiring subscription. And when NIS 2012 comes along later this year (usually around September/October) then you just do the download from the new link and it will run for the rest of you subscription.

OK?

Re: NIS Language

Hi czarek_nor,

Just for clarification. Once you renew your subscription with an English KEY, you will no longer have to worry about the Norton Update Center downloading the wrong language version. In other words once you have renewed with an English key, the Update Center will download updates in English from that point onward.

Best wishes.

Allen

Re: NIS Language

I can see that I have been upgraded from a nubie to a visitor (almost for free) but I still have to ask some nubie questions and confirm a few things.

Hugh,

1. I didn't know that I could upgrade from NIS 2010 to NIS 2011 and continue my NIS 2010 subscription. If this is the case I would rather call it a free upgrade and expect NORTON (during the duration of my subscription) to notify me that a free upgrade to NIS 2011is available. Perhaps I am expecting too much or I understand too little …

2. It's clear to me that I can install NIS 2011 English version (boxed, downloaded) and activate it with any language key as I did the same thing 10 months ago. But  this time, perhaps as a precaution (in case anything goes wrong in the future, see Viscon's reply), but also to gain the advantage mentioned in Allen's reply, I would prefer to use an English key product.

3, Also, I believe that, if not for the language problem (see Viscon's reply), I could select Check for New Version in Help & Support and get a free upgrade to NIS 2011. If so, the English key for NIS 2011 should guarantee a free and "safe" upgrade to NIS 2012 EN in the future - please confirm.

Now the questions:

1. How do I replace the expiring subscription without getting Norton Upgrade/Renewal service "involved" in it?

My intention was to download NIS 2011 just before the expiry date of NIS 2010 and activate it with a new key. Now I know that I can get a free upgrade to NIS 2011 and use it during the duration of my current subscription but I do not see any way of replacing my present subscription with a new one. Perhaps it is too early - 60 days still to go.

2. If I wanted to stay with NIS 2010 English version and replace the expiring subscription I could do it with any key (NIS 2009, NIS 2010 or NIS 2011, English, Polish, …) - correct?

Thanks and sorry for laboring the point but I am sure that more people will benefit from it.

Re: NIS Language

I think I'll let the others navigate through the "rapids" of languages ....   They know what they are talking about .....

To the best of my knowledge the system does do that but perhaps it is complicated by your mixed versions. But in any case it would point you to the Update Center or download files based on your key so from what I understand you should be glad you did not get it. It may be a "feature" of 2011 and I'm pretty certain that 2011 did add a setting not to inform me of Updates.

As long as you have a mixed version you should do it the way suggested here and not any way that comes to your "automatically" including the New Version CHeck in Support -- that's the 2011 wording.

Hang on for AllenM and Co on the rest.

Re: NIS Language

It must be a misunderstanding. A download and install of NIS 2011 EN on top of NIS 2010 EN during the duration of my subscription is for me a free upgrade.

However, we recommend that you do not enter your new product key until a day or two before your current subscription expires because the subscription clock starts over once the new key is entered and you would lose the remaining days on your current subscription.

None of this however affects your ability to upgrade for free to NIS 2011.

HI czarek_nor,

Please see above.

You can download NIS 2011 from the links provided earlier and then if everything is working well with NIS 2010 now, you can simply upgrade over the top of your current version.

I would recommend as a precaution backing up your Identity Safe per the procedure here.

Best wishes.

Re: NIS Language

Thanks Allen.

One thing to clarify. As you know I have now NIS 2010 English version and let's say I want to stay with it. I purchase a boxed NIS 2011 Polish version and enter the product key in the box provided (on Express Renewal). Will the current version of my NIS 2010 EN be changed to NIS 2010 PL? I would expect the English version to be preserved. The new key should only start a new subscription period - correct?

Hi Czarek,

That is correct. The English version will be preserved when you enter the Polish key. As mentioned before, just be aware that if you do this and ever visit the Update Center to get a new product year version it would then be replaced with the Polish version.

As long as you remember not to use the Update Center and instead use direct links provided by the Norton Community, you will be in good shape. :smileywink:

Best wishes.
