NIS LiveUpdate will not Complete

I'm having trouble running LiveUpdate. It will not run automatically or manually. I will notice the red x on the NIS icon in the taskbar and I will try to run it manually. The LiveUpdate screen will pop up  and will so that it is checking for updates. Then it will show "Failed to complete". "Unable to connect to the Norton LiveUpdate server. Please check your internet connection". But I will be connected to the internet. I will then click on the "more info" button and it will open a page for One Click Support. There I will get a message that says "An error has occured with Norton Internet Security" Error: 8921 ,229.

I have checked numerous times the date and time on the computer and it is correct. The only way it will run is to restart my computer and run it manually. The next day it will not run again.

 I'm using Windows XP SP3

Re: NIS LiveUpdate will not Complete

Hi tjrbil,

Here is the fix recommended for this error code:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&do...

If no joy, be sure to check out the "What if this doesn't work?" at the bottom of the page.

Please keep us posted.

Well that didn't work! I downloaded the definitions and it still won't let me run LiveUpdate Manually and it's not running automatically.

Now what???

I still get the message" Unable to connect to the Norton LiveUpdate server. Please check your internet connection" Yes I'm connected to the internet.

Hi

Sorry for the trouble you are having. Please run the Norton power eraser and let us know about its findings. Do not fix anything before getting a green signal from here.

If you get no risks found message, please do a Winsock Reset and then Restart the Computer and check the live Update.

Winsock Reset: Open Run(Win key + r) --> type cmd --> type netsh winsock reset --> hit enter and restart.

Along the same lines as the item yank is referring to:

Check to ensure the checkbox in IE's "LAN Settings" does not have a checkmark in the "Automatically Detect Settings" item under "Automatic Configuration" in IE's "Connection" Tab.

That option is enabled by default when IE is installed.  It causes all sorts of problems with ISP's that use transparent caching proxy servers - when those caching servers are poorly configured and therefore sloppy at getting themselves updated when files at the source servers have changed.

Removing the checkmark allows IE to go directly to the source site - when the transparent caching proxy does not have the file you want.  This gets around the problem of using an ISP where their transparent caching servers are configured and/or run by monkeys.

If you are using some other browser as your default, check to ensure it does not have something similar to the IE option.  If it does, disable similar.

Note: I do not know if NIS uses the parameters in the default browser as its template - or if NIS uses the parameters in IE regardless.  However, the proxy settings dialog box in NIS exactly matches the terminology and layout of the proxy settings dialog in IE.  Hmmm.  Coincidence?  Probably not.

In any case, turning that parameter off in IE normally speeds browsing substantially - by preventing IE from being hamstrung by sloppy transparent caching proxies.  I expect a similar result in NIS.

If you are required to use a proxy server - ensure it is properly configured in the configuration parameters for all your browsers.- as well as in NIS itself.  And similarly to the above, ensure there is no checkmark in the "Automatically Detect Settings" item in your NIS proxy configuration - if you are not specifically required to use a proxy for internet access.

In the NIS configuration, also ensure that "Metered Bandwidth" is set to "No Limit" - or disable "Metered Bandwidth".

Hope this helps.
