NIS Netbook Edition (2010) registration problems

[ Edited ]

Can anyone please help?

I purchased a new laptop (running windows 7) which came with a trial edition of NIS, I had also bought a years subscription (NIS 2010) at the same time (Jan/Feb '11).

I have tried activating the purchased software but each time it downloaded software but never asked for the product key.

Software downloaded and ran normally so thought nothing more. It has now come up saying that it will expire in 5 days, so tried again 2nt to reload.

Software downloaded, clicked 'agree and install', it then continued to uninstall my NIS and reboot. I then followed the download link again and it has reinstalled NIS (no product key request) but still says that it is a trial version with 5 days to expiry.

I cannot find anyway to get the download to ask for my product key!!

Re: NIS Netbook Edition

Hello Trackman

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Did the laptop come with the regular NIS 2011 or the Netbook version? The keys are not interchangeable. If you purchased the netbook version, then the regular NIS would have to be deleted and then the netbook version would have to be downloaded and put the key in.

If you can please clarify for us which version came on the laptop and what version you purchased.? Once we know this information, we can give you the proper links here and instructions on how to get it installed. Thanks.

Re: NIS Netbook Edition

Hello and thanks for the welcome.

I am not sure what was pre-loaded but being a netbook, I guess it was that (but is there is anyway to find out?).

I purchased NIS Netbook Edition 2010 (both Netbook and Software were bought from Argos).

Re: NIS Netbook Edition

Hello Trackman

Assuming the netbook came with NIS 2010 netbook version, please use this link for NIS 2011 netbook edition. It should install on top of NIS 2010 netbook edition.

http://www.norton.com/nisne11

The key from NIS netbook version should work for NIS 2011 netbook version. If it doesn't ask for the key, please hit renew and you will see a box where you can enter the key from the 2010 version. If that doesn't work, then you probably have the standard NIS 2010 installed and then the key for the netbook version of NIS will not work. Being that you purchased both at the same time, I would think that both products would be the same type. All you have to do is enter the key in that box and hit support  and  system status and that should synchronize it with the Norton servers.

Please remember to run live update and reboot after you received all updates.

Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.

You won't be able to see my screenshot for a while, but here is a picture of NIS 2011 Netbook.

On the top left of the main screen it says "Netbook Edition"

On the 2010 version, it's almost the same but I think it's all on one line instead of 2.

I also marked where it says "activate now",  thats where you click to enter the serial number.

I would not assume that since the netbook edition was designed firstly to get around the lack of an optical drive hence the thumbdrive and secondly to extend the graphics to deal with the original very small screens. Now with 10+in screens the  standard edition runs fine (and you have a better chance of needing 3 installations than of having 3 netbooks!) so it would be OK to use the standard edition on a netbook.

There are some other settings like battery savings that are default on the netbook edition but which can be set on the standard one.

As a matter of interest could you give me the make and exact model of the netbook and I'd like to check it out.

Depending on what you want to do you may find that Customer Support will help you resolve it by issuing a new KEY since there is a 60 day Warranty under which you can get a refund and it would be less paper work for them just to give you a different KEY .... It's up to you.

Floplot.

Many thanks for your info.

I followed your instructions and NIS '11 loaded correctly, it then displayed the revised status screen (as displayed by DaveH)which had the option to renew/register subscription at the bottom and this then asked for the product key.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice as this issue has now been resolved :-)
