Re: NIS PRODUCT UPDATE JULY 6 2011 RESTART REQUIRED.

ALF60:

I also received a product update and request for re-boot this morning when I ran a manual LiveUpdate with NIS 2011 (still have v. 18.6.0.29, though).  I checked my LiveUpdate history and confirmed that the 21-June-2011 product update for the Firefox 5.0 compatible toolbar was delivered and successfully installed almost three weeks ago.

I don't know if it's relevant, but I was one of the NIS users who lost their Norton Toolbar when they upgraded to FF5 after the 21-June-2011 release of the FF5-compatible toolbar.   I wonder if Symantec decided to try pushing the same product upgrade a second time to see if this helps FF5 users who are still having problems with their Norton Toolbar.

It was not the FF 5 fix. Got that a long time ago. And I also got a program update this morning.

This may have been a further update to deal with a situation that could occur with a particular sequence of updating FF 3.6 -- don't ask me for details because I don't remember them and I don't think it matters anyway. It's an update to deal with a situation that we may not have. Like others I don't have FF on board.

I got it yesterday hen I manually ran LiveUpdate and saw no Details entry about a restart so I wondered why I got told a restart was needed! -- in fact I probably got it earlier but had not looked or restarted the PC.

NIS 2010 v 17.8.0.5

Only use IE browser, do not have FF browser even installed on my PC

Would these changes/updates effect

NIS 2010 v 17.8.0.5?

I just ran live update and did not get these

Are they only for NIS 2011?

Also, How can I see what version of Norton Tool bar I have?

What version of Symantec IPS I have?

Or again, does none of this effect NIS 2010?

Calls "Or again, does none of this effect NIS 2010?"

Puzzled as to why you are still using NIS 2010, updating to NIS 2011 is free and you have a better product ?

Re: NIS PRODUCT UPDATE JULY 6 2011 RESTART REQUIRED.

Hi Calls:

In the IE menu, go to Tools | Manage Add-ons and select Toolbars and Extensions from the list of add-on types.  The version numbers of your Norton Toolbar and Symantec Intrusion Prevention are listed under Symantec Corporation.  In IE 9, my NIS 2011 version numbers are currently Toolbar v. 2011.6.0.6 and Symantec IP v. 9.8.1.0.

It doesn't appear that today's product update affected my IE add-ons .  However, I can confirm gina's observation that my Firefox 5.0 add-ons have now been updated to Toolbar v. 2011.7.0.8 and IPS v. 3.0.

Re: NIS PRODUCT UPDATE JULY 6 2011 RESTART REQUIRED.

Moderators- If I should post my qustion as a seperate post, please let me know

Would I be correct in assuming that the new Items

IPS v 3.o

Tool Bar v 2011.7.0.8

would only be received by users of NIS/NAV 2011 product?

And tha since I'm using NIS 2010 my versions would still be

IPS  v  9.1.2.5

Norton Tool Bar  2010.6.1.3

Re: NIS PRODUCT UPDATE JULY 6 2011 RESTART REQUIRED.

Hi Calls,

I think that is correct.  All of the compatibility updates to keep Norton products in step with other programs are only being rolled out for the current versions of Norton.  There really is no reason to duplicate efforts in order to backport these changes to older versions, since the newer versions are easily obtained for free by upgrading.  You should be upgrading anyway, as many program fixes and protection enhancements which keep you safe are only available by updating to the most recent version of the products.
