Why is it that I can buy a brand new 3 PC copy of NIS 2012 for half the price of renewing my existing copy through Symantec? You would think I could get a better discount through them for the renewal since it requires no media nor packaging. I've been using this package basically since it came out and occasionally renewals have been cheaper but normally it's much cheaper to buy a new package and just enter the new key code when the old one expires. It's not really a problem except for the frustration of having to do it. You would think they would treat their existing customers better than this.

Hello Msradell
The Norton Store cannot always charge less than the retail outlets that sell the Norton products. If they did this all the time, there would be no stores or reliable online sites that would be able to make any sales of the product.
Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

I realize that they cannot always sell products cheaper than stores or stores wouldn't sell the product. In this case I really don't want to buy the product, I just want to renew it but I can buy the product new cheaper than renewing it! I'm not just talking a couple of dollars or it wouldn't be an issue. The fact is I can buy a complete new version of the 3 user NIS 2012 for less than half the cost of renewing my existing installed version for another year!

You can always buy the product at a retail store and just use the enclosed product key to renew. You don't have to install from the retail CD if it's already installed and tweaked the way you like it. That's what I've done the last three years. You do want to wait until the existing installation is a couple days from expiring since with this method you lose any remaining days.

Do this every time. I get a boxed version for less than half what Symantec want online.
I wonder how many actually pay top dollar each year via the auto renewal route ?

Soooo ... from what I see here, the solution is to buy a new NIS 2012 and use the product key to renew. Is that correct? I mean, a local box store has Norton Internet Security 2012 for $29.99 !!!!!!!! Symantec wants $69.99 to renew. C'mon. ???
Outside of the ease of just letting them take my money automatically, what's the upside to renewal through Symantec?

Welcome,
The upside is that when you renew the remaining days of your subscription are added to your new subscription. With a new key you start at zero days and get 366 added. This is why we recommend that you wait until a day or two before your current subscription expires to install the new key. If you get excited and install the key too soon visit with the folks at customer service here: http://www.norton.com/chat they are usually good about adding days back to a validated subscription.
Keep us in the loop. We'll be here when you need us. Til then
Stay well and surf safe

I just cruise on over to buycheapsoftware.com and purchase a new product and wait until the last day to install the new key. You do have to put up with the daily reminder that the program throws up for a month, but it's a small price to pay. The aforementioned store sells the genuine product and their shipping is very fast, even the free option (FedEx). They also have all of the options you can dream of there, so it's a good site to bookmark for future reference.

Once again, thanks to all for the information.
I should mention that after posting here earlier this week I called Norton with a "WHAT'S UP WITH THAT" question about their pricing. After enduring the canned explanation their support team has to deliver, the support person said they would extend my enrollment a month (end of April) for good will ... and she really did it. I saw that someone else here had the same experience.
Just an FYI.
