bongo,
Have you checked "customize" for the system tray? In WIndows 7 which icons appear and when they appear is a user setting available when you click on the System Tray and select Customize in the popup.
I set both the Norton icons to always show icon and notifications.
Just something to doublecheck ....

Have restarted after the fix 4 times without success. NIS still seems to be running in the background (ccsvchst.exe running, Identity Safe works, etc.) but I can't start NIS!
Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
It sounds like multiple issues might be involved. Since the hotfix only resolves one of them, you might consider (once again):
a. uninstalling NIS
b. running the Norton Removal Tool
c. downloading ccleaner from www.ccleaner.com and running it, using the registry tab and identifying and fixing all issues, then repeating this until no issues are left
d. reinstalling NIS
e. re-running the hotfix

I'm running Windows 7 64bit and the hot fix didn't work for me either.
However when I first start up the PC the Icon is there and some time later it disappears. I too am unable to launch the program from the desktop shortcut once its disappears.
A reboot normally brings it back though, just to disappear again later????
I would be grateful if some one could help........

The hotfix won't fix your scenario. It only fixes a case where the tray icon never appears after startup. You should start a new thread for your issue and include any ids from Errors within your NIS or NAV Security History.

OK, I completely removed all Norton products (NIS 2010, NU 14, Norton Ghost 14) and reinstalled them. Ran Live Update and the hotfix for NIS and restarted about 3 times. The icon showed up all three times, I could navigate, configure and use NIS & I thought everything was good to go again. Alas, today I had to restart the computer and NO NIS icon!!! After 2 more restarts, I still cannot bring up the icon nor can I start the program from the start menu. ccsvchst *32 is running...
Something new this time around though: about 2-3 minutes after trying to start NIS from the start menu, the Norton One Click Support screen pops up with the following:
Error: "8504,106" after I install my Norton 2010 product
It suggests a restart and to run live update. Well, that would be just dandy if I could ever start the program after a restart!!!
So I'm begging again; does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and as mentioned above I'm also running NU 14 and Ghost 14. Neither of the other two Norton products are giving me problems.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Thanks for the information and the hotfix.
I had my first instance of missing icon in the system tray today. Also, NIS (2010 17.5) would not open from the Start Menu. Both problems disappeared after reboot, nevertheless, I applied the hotfix.
It would have been helpful if the KB article indicated if the problem was limited to accessing NIS dialog screens or whether NIS was not functioning and therefore a security risk existed.
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view
Could you please clarify whether there is a security risk with the issue? I oversee six other 2010 NIS installations on XP SP3 machines and I need to determine if I should apply the hotfix to those machines, even if no problems have yet been reported.
Thanks in advance,
Scott

Hi Scott,
The issue that the hotfix applies to was purely cosmetic and Norton was still fully functional. You do not need to apply the hotfix to any systems that are not displaying any symptoms.

Windows XP SP3
NIS 2010 17.5.0.127
after one week of headache, as the icon was there randomly at reboot, I discovered this discussion.
The hotfix seems to work at least for two reboots.
Thanks, but Symantec should provide us some aspirin!

Unfortunaly, the hotfix has not worked for me.
I am running Win 7 64bit
And NIS 2010 17.5.0.127
Norton tells me when I try to start it "Error: "8504,106" after I install my Norton 2010 product"
ccsvhost.exe*32 still runs in the background
