Re: NIS System Tray icon missing

I hope so (hot fix imminent).

But be aware the the people on this forum are a micro-mini percentage of the people with this problem. For me, coming to a site like this is near the bottom of my list of things to do. I try to debug the problem myself, THEN I try going to the company's help desk support (we already know what we'll be facing when we try that). If that doesn't work, I'll try a google search on a keyword description of the problem. By the time i got here, I already concluded much of what has been posted by some of the other users (name of process is ccsvchst, virus protection probably running but no access to UI, program does not start as a normal startup program, but starts as a service, and not launching tray icon is probably due to sytem timing of processes occuring during bootup).  Many of you other guys (and Donna?) probably also suspected many of the same things.

The people on this thread represent a miniscule percentage of the users of NIS 2010 having this problem.  A much larger percentage are stuck with that supremely negative experience, dealing directly with Symantec's "customer support".    As for the people unaware of this problem - Symantec has all of our email addresses from when we activated the program. They could easily notify everyone automatically.

Pity if you'd come here first you would have saved all that ..... and known what the problem was and what was being done about it -- might even have been one of the users with the problem who have helped Norton by providing dumps and logs and running test fixes ....

Re: NIS System Tray icon missing

I virtually always try to fix problems myself first. Helps keep me on my toes, so to speak. I live in Si valley, so it's kind of expected around here. Many times (but not this time) I come up with some kind of a work-around, and I post it when possible.

Remember that Certificate Revocation problem you couldn't turn off with NIS 2009 (prevented users from successfully logging on to many websites, including my credit card balance website). Or, I believe it was Norton 2004 where you suddenly couldn't display the quarantine panel anymore?  (One of their live updates screwed up a key DLL). And Norton REFUSED to fix that? Those ones had work-arounds. In neither case did I see any solutions either from Symantec or on any forums. Sometimes you just gots to fix these things yourself.

Re: NIS System Tray icon missing

I also have the problem, and I have tested whether or not the protection is still working.

I have the ccsvchst.exe process running, but NIS 2010 does not detect any virusses when the taskbar is not shown (because of the problem described here).

So I'm really waiting for the fix :)

Kind regards,

Maarten

Re: NIS System Tray icon missing

Calguy,

I should have said "after trying to fix it yourself" <s>

I can remember lots of things that weren't as they should be and a few that aren't as they should be, here in Norton-land and elsewhere.

But one thing I can say categorically is that Norton does now react to problems; they do not ignore them and hope they go away. I know it's not possible but if you could go through the messages here since the Forums were started up nearly 2 years ago you would see the evidence for it. I just wish their attitude and practices were copied by other software and hardware sources -- there are very few out there who do anything like this.

But Norton is made up of human beings -- I know that because I've seen them in Culver CIty <g> -- and I'm sure they make mistakes and wake up in the middle of the night in cold sweats saying "Oh S**t how did I miss that ..... " and despite the number of them it takes time to track down the cause of a problem especially when you cannot reproduce it in house. We all want it "Yesterday" but the real world doesn't work that way and patience and understanding are virtues to be cultivated -- they have nothing to do with complacency.

Well if I keep on long enough they will have issued the patch ......

Huwyngr

This is all very wierd for somebody with low computer skills but relies on his computer for business and personal reasons. What if Toyota sent a test shim to owners who had complained about their sticky gas pedals, telling them to try it out and then get back to the company about the results? And what if Toyota had not told anybody about the problem other than those who complained? (As far as I know, Symantec has not advised all users to be aware that NIS may not be working as expected.) Like at least one other person who has posted to this forum, my appearance here was a desperate last resort (and this is the first time I have posted to any forum) to find out what is going on. Norton chat support could not fix my problem after three attempts, including remotely messing around on my computer.

Hello All,

I'm happy to tell you that we've completed testing on the Hot Fix for this issue!

We're in the process of finalizing publishing of this Hot Fix, which will be available from a Symantec Support Knowledge Base document and included in a later inline product patch for the Norton Internet Security 2010/Norton AntiVirus 2010 products.

UPDATE - Please see THIS POST for the announcement.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding while we researched and developed this solution.

Cheers,
Tim

Re: NIS System Tray icon missing

Hi all:

Way to go!

As this is a major Patch Tuesday from Microsoft, it would be (IMHO) a good idea to apply their fixes first and ensure that everything is working correctly, before requesting/installing the HotFix.

This is the way that I have done it.

Re: NIS System Tray icon missing

Good catch -- see my reply in the other thread.

IMO the hotfix should be delayed if MS and the guinea-pigs have not had a chance to apply the MS patches and test the Norton hotfix with them in place ... MS patches have a certain reputation of ....
