Hi all!
Even after installing NIS 2010 with all updates, it cannot locate a virus/trojan effects of which I still notice on my PC.
I am running 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 on Intel Core2 Quad CPU @ 2.4GHz, 3GB RAM.
The infection (1) prevents me from opening the Task Manager and (2) has created a blank dial-up connection pointing to nowhere and which almost all network-dependent applications tend to use (instead of the proper one) and don't work hence.
The first symptom seems to be known on the web and a result of too many types of infections; but even a web-search of second problem cannot find it.
Can anyone please advise?
Thanks,
Namik

Hi buddy try norton power eraser
try download process hacker or process explorer.(Max. 1Mb or 1.5mb)
most probably start>run>msconfig also be disabled but give it a try
Download Malwarebytes(5MB) if u can sophos antirootkit(2mb) from softepedia.com(not sure of spelling) search google
download Hijack this if possible If u have a tune up software open the start up to check for any suspicious ones and disable but be cautious
If u dont have one then pls have one like tuneup or Bootspeed(16mb and 10mb) as they help keep Pc health in a good state or use free ones like Disk Defrag(Auslogics) +CCleaner
Please be clear if a virus has been removed by norton
and these are the changes made by it open resolved issue to check for any corrected threat
Virus makes change, antivirus removes them but Undo`s the change I guess not
Use disk heal
800kb
to fix issue like task manager explorer opening new windows etc.
Use 2011version of Norton
But if u r still infectd
try power eraser from norton if thats no good download
PrevX or Hitmanpro/McAfee stinger for just a scan these are only 2mb(max) and will just scan and not provide any real time protection

I forgot Pls dont fix any items dected by Hitman or PrevX as they may have huge no. of false positives(if u r sure then go ahead but if u r not sure pls ask ppl here for suggestions.
Use hijack this and post log so that ppl can analyze or
just open process explorer check for suspicious process open their path Use manual Quarantine to remove them.
try to copy and put copy of file inzip and submit to symantec

Hi namik,
Your description of the network connection problem was somewhat vague. Check the Network Connection LAN proxy settings and make sure to clear any entries that correspond to a proxy, if you are not using one. Some malware change these settings.

That's not the only thing about the infection that is vague, Installing and updating Norton while infected can cause it's own problems.
How Many programs to use
norton power eraser
process hacker
process explorer.
Malwarebytes
sophos antirootkit
Hijack this
Bootspeed
Disk Defrag(Auslogics)
CCleaner
disk heal
PrevX
Hitmanpro
/McAfee stinger
Quads adds Kitchen sink
never used so many programs for one infections or even a combination infection. I didn't even get near that with breaking and cleaning the likes of Ramnit.
All of that loaded on could cause it's own problems, not to mention running programs that cause problems to the system after running scans

Have you actually worked out the probable group of infection?? To use the right tools and work out which way to break (if needed) and repair settings.

I fell that I would have to step in here (as floplot once stepped into my attempts to fix a malware infection.
This is an open forum and is quite dangerous to remediate virus infections here without one on one attention. You may be better off visiting one of below virus removal forums. BleepingComputer is quite backlogged at the moment and will be very busy. Please note, do NOT post in multiple forums as it would be hard for the other guys to follow you. In fact, some forums refuse to help you if you cross post. Please chose ONE forum and STICK with it! All of them are equally good.
Here are a list of reliable malware (generic term for all bad software ie virus, spyware, trojan horse, etc) removal forums:

(Thanks to Delph for providing the list of sites)
Please come back and let us know the thread you have posted and keep us informed.
Note: This post is a slight modifiction on Floplot's response. I take no credit for it. All credit goes to floplot for originally writing this post.

No as, just reinstalling means the infection can survive, Even come across Malware that can survive a Reformat, but there are still ways to remove Malware without reinstalling or reformatting.
The best way to remove a malware is people like Quads
