I've installed and altered the Firewall settings and made it til June 19th. I installed a PC Game on that day and needed to adjust the Firewall to allow play. So from June 19th til present I hadnt needed to adjust anything.
Today I did. But when I tried to configure the settings Symantec Framework shut down on me and I couldnt relaunch NIS 2012 again without rebooting PC.
It did it again, so I rebooted another time.,
This time I decided to immediately seek out Customer Support via Chat. A Symantec tech took over my PC and without him telling me what he was doing he reset my Firewall Settings and said "check it now". Well guess what, it works.
But also guess what? I was pretty upset that by resetting firewall settings it cleared out ALL my previous entries. Symantec said "Norton will recreate it for you".........well yes that part is implied however some PC games crash without me altering the settings. So what did I have to do? YEP relaunch and re-edit my settings.
I launched 31 PC Games, and 10 Program (essential in daily activities), in which took me a total of 53 minutes and it created 56 Entries in which I changed from Auto to Allow
i am NOT happy, but could've been a lot worse right? LOL
All I know is that I've had no problems editing my Firewall settings at least until today when I needed to. Symantec Framework stopped working when I clicked Configure, and I had to reboot my PC to make my Application working again.
I've also learned to make sure I ask what the heck the tech will do before he proceeds because I wouldnt have mind it so much when I had a lot more time to do this, instead it took time away from my pressing schedule today :(
I will reply to this thread again (if someone asks me a question) or if this problem reappears and also next time I seek tech assistance I will tell them whats what before I accept 'remote desktop connection'
Add a few more programs to that list and It will just re-appear.. trust me... its annoying as hell.
It certainly is.
One thing I have found that has enabled me to live with this huge PITA is to go in and remove alot of the "auto" entries. With those fewer in number, it allows me to create new custom rules.

Yep, I;ve went through and deleted a few entries that weren't essential to my use of the PC and its fixed.. for now however, I'm just gonna go over to Trend Micro yet again sense Symantec doesn't know how to code its own programs... Quite sad really, really like using Norton 360, but im done dealing with it. Done with the lack of care all these months to fix the problem correctly when I pointed it back in March. They can sit on it and rotate.

I loaded and ran malwarebytes(free) and then Deleted the application . mostly to see if download /file insight was working and also to run a scan, though NIS 2012 removed it on it's own I thought yesterday I viewed the rule in program control saw that it wasn't there and NIS 2012 crashed, It seems to be crashing once a week, I just reboot and it's back, untill the next time it crashes......Thanks.....Gorpy1

I am using Norton 360, so your set-up may be different.
I have found a built-in work-around that let's you change the firewall settings on a per-program basis. (If this has been mentioned earlier in this thread, I apologize, I just didn't have the patience to sift through all 40+ pages.)
I was having the same problem, did a search, found this thread, and figured I'd share my findings.
That stupid dropdown is worthless, unless you like re-booting your computer in frustration! LOL )
Going to the same page for changing individual program firewall settings, Settings-> Firewall-> Program Rules
Click on the title of the program whose rules you want to change.
Click the yellow Modify button at the bottom of the list.
From the new screen that pops us, you can create/change any rules you want.
(Just be sure to click apply whne you are finished.)

Work around - open the program - settings -- Firewall - Program rules as usaual
Highlight the program u want to change/ modify - Do not use the pulldown arrow (in the Access column) but instead use the modify tab at bottom - that way u can change / modify the firewall settings.
This also applies to norton 360

There is no modify tab, the only way to access firewall rules is too click configure which results in a crash. Hence why we are **bleep**ing about it.

Yupa-looks like we is going to get ripped. We've all found a significant defect that should have never been allowed to be released.

wow, fascinating. I haven't been here for a while after posting my results with 360 many months ago and see this is still not solved?
Symantec, I lost all hope for you and it looks like the last version I've purchased will be/was v5.
